A Host of People, and the La Carpa Teen Ensemble, proudly presents ¡Brilla! El Despertar del Alebrije en Mi (Brilla! Glow! The Awakening of the Alebrijes in Me) an original, bilingual production inspired by the origin story of alebrijes, the mythical creatures imagined by Mexican artisan Pedro Linares. This playful and powerful performance will run from April 24-27, 2025, at The Senate Theater.

In ¡Brilla! Glow!, audiences are transported to 1930s Mexico City, where Pedro Linares, stricken with illness, falls into a fever dream that takes him into Prismatica, a world where alebrijes exist but remain divided by color and ideology. Believing that humans possess infinite wisdom, the creatures battle to claim Pedro as their own. Through his journey, Pedro reveals the struggles and contradictions of the human world, leading the alebrijes to discover that true wisdom lies not in dominance, but in unity, self-acceptance, and collaboration. This vibrant tale explores pressing themes such as race, global warming, and belonging, urging audiences to embrace their own brilliance and collective strength.

La Carpa Teen Ensemble has established itself as a vital space for Latiné youth in Detroit to tell their stories through theater. Last year, the ensemble debuted the world premiere of their original work Lost in Our Roots, their first production as an official program of A Host of People. Now, with ¡Brilla! Glow!, they continue to craft compelling narratives that honor cultural heritage while speaking to contemporary issues.

Karilú Alarcón Forshee, founder and director of La Carpa Teen Ensemble, said, “¡Brilla! El Despertar del Alebrije en Mi is the third show since we began this journey in 2021, and I could not feel more proud of the amazing team we have built. Today more than ever, the youth from the Latine community need a space where their voices can be heard through art and community. This play is about choosing light during difficult times and embracing resilience from a place of awe and love. Through comedy and imagination, we revisit history through a lens of color and creativity. I feel incredibly fortunate to work with the youth of Southwest Detroit—they continue to be great teachers, inspiring me to create and share a light that will hopefully spread broadly to better their futures and communities.”

Host of People, known for its commitment to innovative and socially impactful theater, has long provided a platform for local and emerging artists. As the company celebrates over 10 years of artful storytelling and community engagement, it continues to champion Detroit’s wealth of talent, creating productions that reflect the city’s diverse voices and artistic brilliance.

Sherrine Azab, AHOP Co-Director and Producer, said,”At A Host of People, we believe in the power of storytelling to build community and inspire change. Collaborating with the incredible young artists of La Carpa Teen Ensemble on ¡Brilla! Glow! has been a deeply rewarding experience. This production is a testament to the creativity, resilience, and brilliance of Latiné youth in Detroit, and we are honored to provide a space where their voices can shine. Detroit is home to an extraordinary wealth of talent, and we are thrilled to showcase the artistry of our city’s youth and local designers, performers, and visionaries. Through this vibrant and imaginative story, we invite audiences to reflect, celebrate, and embrace the magic of unity.”

A Host of People y el Grupo de Teatro Juvenil La Carpa, orgullosamente presentan ¡Brilla!
