This past Monday evening, March 30, the City of Detroit’s Department of Neighborhoods (DON) held a special “DON Cast” via zoom to update residents on the newly created youth-focused division – Youth and Education. Nearly 150 participants were online as special presenters from the division discussed their plans for the first one hundred days and beyond of Mayor Mary Sheffield’s term.

“Detroit youth are our greatest asset. Period,” said JerJuan Howard, Director of Youth Affairs, who stressed that direct youth engagement and feedback were central to the division’s strategy.

”Youth are involved in the decision-making and they’re involved in all of our processes…youth are not just our future; they are our present,” said Angelica Williams from the Office of Youth Affairs.

The Youth and Education division will be geared toward ages 0-26 and will focus on early education, K-12 partnerships between Detroit Public Schools, charter schools, and non-profits, youth workforce, civic engagement, and out-of-school programs.

The Youth and Education division will be led by Dr. Chanel Hampton, who holds a doctorate in organization leadership from Creighton University.

”Our North Star for this team is to just ensure that every young person in our city has access to opportunity inside and outside of school, beyond high school, and well into young adulthood,” said Hampton.

The city’s first one hundred day priorities are focused on tackling absenteeism, transportation barriers, and access to out-of-school programming.

Key upcoming initiatives include “State of the Youth” high school tours, which will begin in early April and is expected to reach 7,000 students throughout 11 high schools in the first six weeks. Initiatives also include the formation of a Mayoral Youth cabinet for civic engagement, a Mayoral Fellowship for college students, and a summer program called “Occupy the Summer.”

”We want to make sure that we are providing a platform where families, and young people in the city, now where all opportunities exist that are vetted,” Hampton said.

The meeting was held the day before the State of the City address by newly elected Mayor Sheffield. More information about the Youth and Education initiatives will be released by the city in the coming months as they take shape.

”We can’t solve anything alone. It takes everybody at the table,” Howard said.

“No podemos resolver nada solos.
