Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation Announces Reopening of Detroit Children’s Museum

Detroit Children’s Museum reopens in July with interactive exhibits, STEM learning, and family fun after years of closure

  • The foundation secured $819,200 in grant funding from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity to help bring the historic space back to life.
  • DPSCD students were among the first to step inside during an exclusive preview period. The museum re-opens to the public in July.

The Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation (DPSCD Foundation), the official philanthropic arm of Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), recently announced the reopening of the Detroit Children’s Museum, one of the nation’s oldest children’s museums.

Established in 1917, the Detroit Children’s Museum is recognized as one of the first museums in the country dedicated to children. It reopened its doors thanks to $819,200 in grant funding awarded to the DPSCD Foundation by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), along with additional investment from DPSCD to support critical facility repairs and operations.

As a result of these investments, the museum, owned and operated by Detroit Public Schools Community District, has transformed the space into a next-generation hub for creativity, exploration, and early learning, sparking curiosity among young minds.

“This is a historic moment for Detroit,” said Kerrie Mitchell Campbell-Mabins, President & CEO of the DPSCD Foundation. “The Children’s Museum has shaped generations of learners, and reopening its doors means reigniting that spark for thousands more. The state’s investment allows us to bring this vision to life, and it will take all of us to keep the museum going strong — partners, families, and community leaders who believe in giving Detroit students the same world-class opportunities as children everywhere.”

The Detroit Children’s Museum houses an extraordinary collection of more than 2.5 million artifacts, including historical objects, science and math materials, and cultural treasures. More than half of these items are actively loaned out to DPSCD schools, ensuring students across the city benefit from the museum’s resources. The reopening features rotating exhibits, interactive science and art stations, imaginative play areas, and access to curated artifacts celebrating Detroit’s rich history and culture.

This past winter, DPSCD students had the first opportunity to experience the museum during an exclusive preview period. Their feedback is helping to shape exhibits and programming, ensuring the museum reflects the voices of the young people it will continue to serve.

“The Children’s Museum holds a special place in the hearts of most Detroiters who were able to visit when they were young students in Detroit Public Schools,” said Alycia Meriweather, Deputy Superintendent, Detroit Public Schools Community District. “With the re-opening of the Children’s Museum, DPSCD students will be able to create new memories, viewing the bright display cases of unique local and global artifacts, and participating in interactive learning experiences.”

The museum’s story is one of resilience. From 2009 through 2020, it operated at limited capacity until the pandemic forced its closure. Since then, the museum has continued to serve as a lending resource for educators, supporting nearly 64,000 student learning contacts in the 2024–25 school year through kits and STEM materials loaned across more than 60 schools.

With new funding secured, the Detroit Children’s Museum will reclaim its place as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and educational landscape. Located at 6134 2nd Avenue in Detroit’s New Center Area, the museum will re-open to the public in July welcoming school field trips, homeschool groups, families, and visitors, joining Detroit’s cultural corridor alongside the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Michigan Science Center, and others.
