Blue Tsunami Sweeps Across Michigan and the Nation

Michigan voters elect Jocelyn Benson governor and Abdul El-Sayed U.S. Senator, the first Muslim senator. Latino voters flip Texas and California firsts. Belda Garza tops Lincoln Park council.

On Tuesday, November 3, voters across the state of Michigan and all across America sent political shockwaves to Washington D.C. and state capitals saying with a clear voice, enough with the cruelty of the Trump Administration’s policies. They voted instead to turn to candidates who represent decency and demonstrate a genuine interest in making their lives better by lowering the cost of living, ending senseless wars and rooting out corruption in government at all levels.

In Michigan, voters will send Jocelyn Benson to serve as Governor alongside Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate in Lansing. And, in a strong vote of support for an agenda that benefits all Michiganders, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed will go to Washington as the first Muslim Senator. As El-Sayed proclaimed in his victory speech late Tuesday night, “Michigan chose hope”.

President Trump campaigned these past few months by asking voters to act as if he was on the ballot, and they did by voting overwhelmingly to reject his policies that ignored the needs of everyday Americans. The billionaires (and one trillionaire) lost big, too. After literally pouring hundreds of millions of dollars to prop up flawed Republican candidates who would continue to rubber stamp Trump’s agenda, their dollars were no match for the voices of the people.

Latino voters flexed their political muscles at the ballot box in these midterms by electing James Talarico as the next U.S. Senator from Texas and Gina Hinojosa as Governor of that once solid red state. Xavier Becerra will become the first Latino Governor of California. Latinos turned out in massive numbers across the country to reject the cruelty of the Trump Administration’s Mass Deportation policies and demand that Washington act to relieve the economic struggles that Americans are experiencing.

Locally, Belda Garza was the top vote-getter in the race for Lincoln Park City Council and is in line to become Council president. EL CENTRAL will have more detailed election results and reporting on the growing influence of Latino voters in forthcoming issues.
