Saint Kitt’s and Nives

The island of Liamuiga — “fertile land,” according to the Carib Indigenous people who inhabited it — was named Saint Christopher in 1493 by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to America. It was colonized by Europeans in 1623, when Thomas Walker established the first English settlement in the Caribbean. The neighboring island, Nevis, named after its snow-covered volcano, was colonized five years later. Once the extermination of the Carib people had been carried out, the English began cultivating crops, particularly sugar cane, using enslaved African labor.

After disputes between France and England, Saint Christopher and Nevis became a British colony under the Treaty of Versailles of 1783, along with other Caribbean islands. It was not until 1834 that the Afro-descendant enslaved population was freed from slavery; however, many of the formerly enslaved people continued working on the sugar plantations, so the sugar-based economy did not decline as quickly as in other parts of the West Indies.

St. Kitts and Nevis became an independent federated state within the Commonwealth on September 19, 1983. Under the agreement, Nevis developed its own legislature and gained the power to separate from the federation. It is the smallest country in the Americas in both size and population, located on two small islands separated by 3 km. It gained independence from Great Britain on September 19, 1983. Most of the population is of African descent, and it has 60,000 inhabitants. English is spoken there, and it has two universities, one specializing in Health Sciences and the other in Medicine.

These idyllic sister islands, three kilometers apart at their closest point, both have lush tropical mountain forests, uncrowded beaches, historic ruins, towering dormant volcanoes, charming Georgian capitals in Basseterre (St. Kitts) and Charlestown (Nevis), an intact cultural heritage, and friendly people. Nevis seems determined to remain unspoiled (there are still no traffic lights). Its natural attractions and activities rival those of St. Kitts, sharing activities ranging from mountain biking and ecotourism to windsurfing and deep-sea fishing, as well as simply lying in a hammock and dining in romantic candlelit courtyards.

On the island of Nevis is also the town of Charlestown, a very small settlement with interesting landmarks such as St. Thomas Anglican Church and the Alexander Hamilton Museum House. The ferry from St. Kitts docks in the center of Charlestown, the beautiful and small capital of Nevis, where banks and businesses coexist with tourist services and Victorian houses. It is a fun place to walk around and is almost never crowded because large cruise ships do not call at Nevis. The greater Charlestown area can easily be explored on foot; walking fifteen minutes north from the center takes you to the beautiful Pinney’s Beach. Charlestown is also the starting point of the Nevis Heritage Trail, a trail that connects 25 places of historical importance, such as churches, sugar mills, military facilities, and natural areas.

Touch of Silence

When silence whispers,
it so often touches the soul.
It ruminates like love songs,
and its voice resembles the soft chants of slow-moving water
as it kisses the jagged faces of rocks.
It makes me homesick…

And I want to see you with my skin,
touch you with my eyes.
It makes me want to feel
the serene sounds of daylight cascading in the air.
And I want to taste the wholeness of this quiet stillness.

You could let me linger, perhaps
until this soulful canopy of silence embraces me.
Then, I want to stroll carefree along the tree-lined streets,
camp on the banks of your smile and drink in the beauty of your eyes.
Let me relish this silence
and rest my head in its gentle warmth.

I long to know deeply those soothing melodies of silence,
and to bask in their comfort.
Let me fall asleep beneath the soft breath of a silent gaze
and find time lounging, enjoying the silence.

Let me know you,
hold you, and watch the dreamy ripples of silence reflecting off your smile.
Let me hear you,
breathe you and graft images of you
on soft canvasses behind my eyes
so, I can always see you when the gentle, curious fingers of sunrise touch my
face.

Let me see you, hear you,
wrap you around my heart like down blankets
and hold you forever in the palms of my eyes.

lentamente

mientras besa

las superficies escarpadas de las rocas.

Me hace sentir nostalgia de hogar…

Y quiero verte con mi piel,

Tocarte con mis ojos.

Me hace querer sentir

me abrace.

Entonces, quiero caminar despreocupadamente

por las calles bordeadas de árboles,

acampar en las orillas de tu sonrisa

y beber la belleza de tus ojos.

Déjame saborear este silencio

y descansar mi cabeza

en su cálida suavidad.

Anhelo conocer profundamente

y sostenerte

para siempre

en las palmas de mis ojos.
