Michigan’s westside received a special visit from Mexican-veteran Journalist Jorge Ramos and his daughter, author and journalist Paola Ramos.

Latino residents of Holland, MI and surrounding communities gave a warm welcome to Jorge and Paola Ramos

The father-daughter duo launched a podcast-video series in 2025 called “The Moment with Jorge Ramos and Paola Ramos,” where the two examine social issues, current politics, and culture through the Latino lens.

For this week’s episode, Jorge and Paola traveled to Holland, Michigan, where Latinos make up approximately 24 percent of the population.

According to City of Holland data, Latinos have resided in the area since well before the 1930s originating from a multitude of different places such as the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America.

Latino residents in Holland and in the entirety of Michigan are expected to comprise a significant segment of the Michigan electorate this year. With a lot on the line and an intense race between the U.S. Senate candidates Mike Rogers and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, all eyes are on Michigan–once again.

Last Sunday, October 25, Jorge and Paola recorded an episode of their podcast in anticipation of one of Michigan’s most heated races with an interview with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senator. His Republican opponent Mike Rogers was also invited but did not make an appearance.

Hundreds of residents from Holland and neighboring cities showed up in the masses, lining up as early as three hours before the event began.

The event began at 1pm with a Meet and Greet with the Ramos team organized by MI Poder. (See article and photos below.) That program was followed by the podcast interview, Questions & Answers with Holland community residents and a rally where El-Sayed assured Latino voters, as the next U.S Senator, he would uplift and support Latinos across Michigan no matter their status or country of origin.

EL CENTRAL reporter and social media specialist Juanita Zuniga poses a question to Jorge and Paola Ramos.

The Moment Podcast was brought to Michigan by event organizers Cynthia Martínez, Rebecca Padnos Altamirano and Veronica Beltran, who have deep roots of advocacy in Michigan.

Jorge and Paola Ramos asked El-Sayed several questions centering on Latino political and social issues such as immigration, ICE, pathways to citizenship, his plans to protect Michiganders, and addressing true fears that resonate with the Latino community across Michigan.

When asked about his stance on ICE and the behavior from ICE we have seen throughout Michigan and across the nation El-Sayed stood firm on his response: “ICE is an agency that shouldn’t exist, you can’t reform or fix it,” which has been his stance since his 2018 run for Michigan governor.

The event has the potential to play a big role in amplifying Latino’s and the role they will play in this year’s election in Michigan.

“There hasn’t been a conversation on what strong immigration reform looks like, said community organizer Edgar Mandujano “and being someone who has family members who are impacted by a lot of the policies coming out of Washington D.C and the federal level it’s so important to have someone in Michigan who is fighting for us.”

From abuelitas to first time voters, the Latino community showed up and showed out making it an unforgettable multi-generational affair. Taking place on the westside of Michigan showed the power in uplifting a population of the Latino voices that seemingly gets left out of the conversation despite its growing Latino population.

The podcast by Jorge and Paola Ramos featuring the interview with Abdul El-Sayed will be streamed on The Moment’s youtube channel, Apple Podcast, Audible, and iHeartRadio app.

MI Poder Sponsors Podcast Meet and Greet Event

MI Poder was proud to host a community meet-and-greet with Jorge and Paola Ramos in Holland, Michigan, creating space for our Gente to connect, share their experiences, and discuss the issues shaping their lives and communities ahead of this critical election. The gathering centered the power of the Latino vote in Michigan and reflected the mission that has driven MI Poder’s power-building efforts since our founding in 2022. We are deeply grateful to the Ramos family for making time for these much-needed conversations and for listening to the experiences and perspectives of Latinos here in Michigan. Our communities deserve to be part of the conversations that shape our democracy and our future—not simply as an audience, but as storytellers, trusted messengers, and leaders whose voices carry power. We were proud to help make this gathering possible and create an opportunity for our Gente to be heard, and we hope it inspired more familias to make their voices count at the ballot box.

At MI Poder, we believe our communities deserve the tools, resources, and opportunities to shape their own futures. We show up unapologetically in the power we hold collectively. This gathering reflects our commitment to building political power beyond election season. Elections are critical opportunities to influence the policies and decisions that affect our everyday lives, but our work continues year-round: Educating our communities, strengthening relationships, developing trusted messengers, and building the leadership and infrastructure needed for lasting change. We are grateful to our MI Poder staff, volunteers, trusted messengers, and partners who made Sunday’s gathering possible. Together, we are building a future where our Gente lead, belong, and thrive.

Latino residents of Holland, MI and surrounding communities gave a warm welcome to Jorge and Paola Ramos

EL CENTRAL reporter and social media specialist Juanita Zuniga poses a question to Jorge and Paola Ramos.
