Southwest Detroit: Latino Voices, Patriotism and Dignity

The rally in Southwest Detroit took place at Western International High School. In a high energy speech, Ocasio-Cortez focused on the role of Latino communities in the country’s political and civic life. She discussed the meaning of being American, describing patriotism through the nation’s founding ideas, freedoms and constitutional convictions.

She criticized the treatment of Latino communities as bargaining chips in political negotiations and raised concerns about immigrants’ rights and constitutional protections. Her remarks connected those issues to the dignity of working families and the importance of leaders responding to community concerns rather than treating them as expendable.

Ocasio-Cortez linked these concerns to her support for El-Sayed, presenting him as a candidate she believes would defend Latino communities’ interests. She also stressed unity, civic participation and the critical importance of voting.

Pontiac: Canvassing and a $1 Million Commitment

At the Pontiac canvassing event, Ocasio-Cortez announced a $1 million commitment to support El-Sayed’s Senate campaign. The commitment was a major announcement of the visit and placed financial support for the campaign alongside her remarks about mobilizing supporters and organizing ahead of the election.

The gathering brought supporters together for canvassing and community outreach. El-Sayed was not present at either event but his supporters were energized, nonetheless.

The Power of the Ballot

In her remarks in her Southwest Detroit speech, Ocasio-Cortez told attendees: “They can walk these streets, but they cannot stop our ballots.” She also emphasized each individual’s importance: “You matter, and don’t you ever forget it!”

At both appearances, attendees wearing “Latinos for Abdul” T-shirts were visible in the audience.

About the Coalition of Latinos for Abdul for Senate

The Coalition of Latinos for Abdul for Senate is a statewide coalition whose mission is to encourage Latinos across Michigan to get involved and vote. Through member outreach, community events and grassroots organizing, the coalition is mobilizing Latino voters in support of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate.

The Michigan Democratic Party has announced that former President Barack Obama will visit Detroit on Saturday, October 24 for a rally in support of El-Sayed, Jocelyn Benson, candidate for governor, and the other Democratic candidates for office on the ballot on November 3. Early voting in Michigan starts next Saturday, October 24 while absentee ballots can be turned in a drop boxes across the city and the state. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/vote

Southwest Detroit: Voces latinas, patriotismo y dignidad
