Windsor, Ontario – After eight years of construction, 14 years of planning and more than two decades of advocating for an alternative bridge crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Canada, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is now operational and serving the transportation and commerce needs of our region.

On Friday, July 24, representatives from the national government of Canada, the province of Ontario, the city of Windsor and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority and Bridging North America were joined by members of the Howe Family to officially inaugurate the Gordie Howe International Bridge at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the historic opening.

In a statement released during the ceremony, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority characterized the Gordie Howe International Bridge as “one of the most significant infrastructure projects in North America, built through partnership, ambition, and a shared belief that investing in modern infrastructure builds a stronger future”.

“The Gordie”, as it is affectionately becoming known, officially opened to traffic on Monday, July 27, welcoming travelers from both sides of the border. The bridge and connecting facilities will transform how people and goods move across North America by creating a direct, highway-to-highway connection between Ontario’s Highway 401 and Michigan’s Interstate-75, along a corridor that supports $300 billion a year in trade between Michigan and Ontario.

While Michigan and U.S. officials were “disinvited” from the celebratory ribbon-cutting due to President Trump’s threat to impose even higher tariff’s on Canadian products, Michigan leaders were quick to join in celebrating the momentous opening of the new crossing.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was among the first Americans to cross the bridge speeding along the new pavement in a Michigan-built Ford Mustang.

“I ran for governor to build bridges between communities and make Michiganders’ lives better,” Whitmer said. “I’m proud to celebrate the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which will do just that. Built by skilled workers on both sides of the Detroit River, this bridge is an engineering marvel. It’s also a symbol of the partnership that has defined Michigan and Canada for generations and what we can accomplish when we work together. I’m proud we got the job done during my administration on behalf of so many Michiganders who fought for this bridge and for Michigan, Canada, and our future.”

Sandy K. Baruah, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit Regional Chamber noted the significance of the new border crossing to international trade, particularly Michigan’s diversifying economic base.

“Opening the Gordie Howe International Bridge starts the next chapter in the historic trade relationship between the U.S. and Canada,” he said. “This critical infrastructure will enhance Michigan’s advanced manufacturing, automotive, agricultural, and tourism industries while benefitting employers and residents across the Detroit-Windsor region for generations to come.”

Designed with six bridge lanes, 16 toll lanes and 60 Canada and U.S. inspection lanes, the new crossing and its modern ports of entry enhance efficiency, reliability and security for commercial and passenger traffic.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is the first new crossing between Ontario and Michigan in over 60 years. Its 720 ft towers are among the tallest structures in the region, its main span is the longest for any cable-stayed bridge in North America, and its connecting ports of entry are the largest along the Canada-US border. A stand-out feature, the toll-free multi-use path, will open to walkers and cyclists on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.

A key component of the design-build phase of the project was the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan. The result of community members, agencies and governments coming together to create meaningful and lasting impacts, $23 million was invested to deliver in over 130 community-driven initiatives.

Supporting efficient traffic movement, the state-of-the-art toll lanes located at the U.S. and Canadian Ports of Entry were designed with customers in mind allowing for various payment methods including Breakaway, the Gordie Howe International Bridge toll discount program. Account holders enjoy lower toll rates, time savings and hassle-free payment.
