Detroit youth golf clinic brings Rip Hamilton and Bank of America together to introduce kids to golf, confidence and opportunity

DETROIT —The iconic Belle Isle Golf Center was filled with a different kind of energy as the usual, rhythmic squeak of sneakers on a basketball court were replaced by the crisp ping of titanium golf clubs hitting golf balls. It was the sound of 60 enthusiastic young Detroiters gathered on the historic island park for a unique, life-changing opportunity: to learn the fundamentals of golf alongside three-time NBA All-Star and 2004 Detroit Pistons Champion, Richard “Rip” Hamilton.

The clinic was hosted by Bank of America as part of its national Golf with Us initiative. The program brought together diverse young golfers, ages 6 to 12, from Detroit PAL, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, and First Tee Greater Detroit. For many of the clinic participants, it marked the first time they had ever held a golf club. The initiative was created to help make golf more accessible and shift the perception of golf as an exclusive sport, defined by steep entry costs, expensive equipment, and private golf club memberships.

Throughout the afternoon, Hamilton — who was joined on the green by his son, Deuce Hamilton, playing guard this fall for Oakland University — worked closely with the kids alongside local PGA professionals. The youth rotated through interactive instructional stations, focusing on the full swing, chipping, putting and even foot golf. And the “Refuel Zone,” was a clinic highlight where instructors taught the students mental fitness tips, stress management, and confidence-boosting exercises, focused on building strong minds as well as strong golf swings.

Bridging the Gap and Building Character

“Golf is a game I am truly passionate about, and I love that Bank of America is breaking down barriers to the sport for kids in our community,” said Hamilton, who regularly competes in celebrity and charity tournaments. “When someone gives you access and believes in you, it changes everything. Golf teaches focus, patience, integrity, confidence and so many life skills that help young people thrive on and off the course.”

Wyatt Smith, Managing Director of Global Commercial Banking at Bank of America, joined Hamilton on the green and echoed the sentiment that sports are an invaluable gateway to personal development and mentorship.

“Providing access to kids who are playing golf for the first time is incredibly important to us because of the profound life skills they can build through the game,” said Smith. “Golf is not an easy sport — you are going to struggle at first. But facing that challenge teaches these kids that hard work pays off, and once you start improving, it becomes a lot of fun. Beyond the physical activity and the benefits of being outdoors, it is a great way for them to make new friends.”

“We are deeply committed to the communities where we work, live and play, and this clinic is a perfect way to give back,” Smith added.

Sustainable Investment in Detroit’s Future

To ensure that the magic of the afternoon extends far beyond a single summer day, Bank of America highlighted its partnership with the PGA of America REACH Foundation and First Tee of Greater Detroit. Through this collaborative effort, participants received information on how to access golf instruction and classes throughout the remainder of the summer.

Additionally, every participant went home with a free one-year membership to Youth on Course. The membership allows youth ages 6 – 18 to play rounds of golf for $5 or less at participating area courses, including Chandler Park Golf Course, Royal Oak Golf Center and Sycamore Hills Golf Club, alongside affordable simulator sessions and free professional lessons. The national program has already successfully registered more than 187,000 young people across the country — including more than 4,500 children in Michigan.

Ed Siaje, President of Bank of America Detroit, emphasized the bank’s long-term vision of promoting equity and economic mobility in Southeast Michigan’s communities.

“Our goal is to foster economic mobility and equity in Detroit, and that starts with opening doors and investing in the confidence, health and future leadership of Detroit’s next generation,” said Siaje. “Golf with Us helps every new, young golfer in this community to know that they belong on any green, in any boardroom, and in any space they choose to enter. Partnering with Youth on Course, Detroit PAL, the Boys & Girls Clubs and First Tee allows us to build these sustainable pathways together.”

The clinic concluded with a group photo and smiles on the faces of the 60 young participants, who made it clear that the afternoon was about much more than sport. It was about community, opportunity, and proving that the future leaders of Detroit are ready to play.
