Nicaragua travel guide: Explore volcanoes, beaches, history and traditional cuisine while discovering why this hidden gem deserves your next adventure

Nicaragua is one of those Central American countries that, although it sometimes gets left out of the region’s major tourist routes, has an incredible natural and cultural diversity. It lies between Honduras and Costa Rica, with coastlines along both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and its territory is home to lakes, volcanoes, mountains, forests, waterfalls, and beaches. In fact, the Nicaraguan Tourism Board presents the country as the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes,” a description that seems pretty fitting when you look at the variety of landscapes found throughout the country.

But Nicaragua cannot be understood solely through its landscapes, because behind its cities, towns, and natural areas lies a history shaped by Spanish colonization, internal political struggles, foreign interventions, and different revolutionary processes that left a deep mark on the country’s national identity. Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821, when the Captaincy General of Guatemala declared its separation from the Spanish Crown. Nicaragua later became part of the United Provinces of Central America, and after the federation dissolved, it became an independent republic in 1838. For much of the nineteenth century, political life was shaped by the rivalry between liberals and conservatives, particularly between the cities of León and Granada.

The country’s history remained especially complicated throughout the twentieth century. Nicaragua experienced U.S. interventions and later spent several decades under the political dominance of the Somoza family. Anastasio Somoza García gained control of the National Guard and later became president, beginning a period of family rule that continued with his sons. In opposition to this regime, the Sandinista National Liberation Front emerged, a movement that eventually succeeded in overthrowing Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1979. A new revolutionary period began from that point on, accompanied by strong internal tensions and the war between the Sandinista government and the group known as the Contras during the 1980s. In 1990, elections brought Violeta Barrios de Chamorro to the presidency and opened a new political chapter in Nicaragua’s contemporary history.

Nicaragua has also become an attractive destination for people looking for a wide variety of landscapes. In the mountainous region of Matagalpa, for example, there is an area known for its mountains, rivers, cloud forests, and numerous waterfalls. The Nicaraguan Tourism Board highlights the Tuma-La Dalia area as a nature destination, where Cascada Blanca is located. The waterfall gets its name from the white foam created when the clear, cool water falls. The mountainous surroundings of Matagalpa offer a very different image from coastal Nicaragua and provide an opportunity to experience a wetter and greener side of the country.

A completely different landscape can be found in San Juan del Sur, in the department of Rivas, along the Pacific coast. This bay is one of Nicaragua’s best-known tourist destinations and stands out for its beaches and ocean-related activities. The Nicaraguan Tourism Board includes San Juan del Sur as part of the Pacific Coastal Route, where, in addition to relaxing on the beach, visitors can enjoy activities such as surfing, sport fishing, sailing, and diving. In this way, Nicaragua’s coastline shows another side of the country, one shaped by the ocean, tropical weather, and coastal life.

However, getting to know Nicaragua also means sitting down at the table, because its cuisine is an important expression of the country’s cultural diversity. Some of its most common dishes include gallo pinto, nacatamal, and indio viejo. It is common to find fried plantain slices, rice, and beans served as sides in Nicaraguan cuisine, while along the Caribbean coast, coconut is also commonly incorporated into dishes. Nicaraguan cuisine also maintains a strong presence of corn.

One of the region’s best-known dishes is vigorón, which is made with boiled cassava, pork cracklings, and cabbage salad, traditionally served on plantain leaves. There is also rondón, made with ingredients such as fish, coconut milk, cassava, bananas, and sometimes meat.
