On Thursday, July 16, MANA de Metro Detroit held its major annual event, the Brindis Luncheon, an opportunity to raise funds to support the MANA Scholarship Program as well as the Hermanitas and Mentorship Programs. The Brindis Luncheon is a celebratory occasion in which MANA publicly recognizes outstanding individuals that support the Latino community in Metro Detroit, through the presentation of the Adelita and Amigo of the Year Awards.
This year, the mistress of ceremony was Michelene Silva, LMSW, who provides mental health services to students at Aztec Eagles Academy High School and volunteers her time as the MANA Secretary.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Vanessa Reynolds, MiHC Managing Director of College Access & Success and MANA member. Dr. Reynolds inspired and energized the audience while sharing her upbringing and educational journey in Detroit. From learning English as a young student to being a three-time graduate from Wayne State University, Dr. Reynolds’ journey has taught her about “resilience, perseverance, and believing in herself.” She credited her family’s unwavering support and encouragement from educators, Mr. Grams and Mr. Stinger, for inspiring her to pursue higher education. Dr. Reynolds shared stories about the outstanding mentorship she received from her dissertation chair, Dr. Shields, who often guided and encouraged her during moments of self-doubt. As the first doctora in her family, Dr. Reynolds celebrates this milestone as both a personal achievement and an opportunity to give back to her community by opening doors for other first-generation students pursuing higher education.
This year, MANA bestowed the Adelitas award to three exceptional Latinas in recognition of their spirit, courage, perseverance and commitment to improving the lives of Latinos in Metro Detroit. MANA’s 2026 Adelita Award recipients are Elizabeth Gonzalez, Martina Guzman, and Rebecca Muñoz.
The Amigo of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Jorge Chinea, Director, for the Center of Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) at WSU for his continued leadership, contributions, and support of our Latino students.
Due to the generous support our sponsors and donors, 20 young Latina students were awarded $2,000 scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year. The scholarship categories are the Dr. Ellen Ochoa STEM Scholarship, the Monica L. Martinez Leadership Scholarship, the Carmen Muñoz Entrepreneurship Scholarship, the Gloria Rosas Teacher Education Scholarship, the Eva Garza Dewaelsche Community Service Award, and the MANA General Scholarship. Since the inception of the program, MANA has awarded 207 scholarships totaling $296,000.

Brindis Anual 2026 de MANA de Metro Detroit Celebra y Apoya a Latinas Exitosas
El jueves 16 de julio, MANA de Metro Detroit realizó su evento anual más importante, el Brindis Luncheon, una oportunidad para recaudar fondos que apoyen el MANA Scholarship Program así como los Programas Hermanitas y Mentorship. El Brindis Luncheon es una ocasión de celebración en la cual MANA reconoce públicamente a individuos excepcionales que apoyan a la comunidad latina en Metro Detroit, a través de la presentación de los Adelita y Amigo of the Year Awards.
Este año, la maestra de ceremonias fue Michelene Silva, LMSW, quien proporciona servicios de salud mental a estudiantes en Aztec Eagles Academy High School y ofrece su tiempo como Secretaria de MANA.
La oradora principal fue la Dra. Vanessa Reynolds, Directora de MiHC de College Access & Success y miembro de MANA. La Dra. Reynolds inspiró y energizó a la audiencia mientras compartía su infancia y su camino educativo en Detroit.
