Congratulations to LA SED for another successful Recognition Luncheon held Thursday, May 1 at the MGM Grand Detroit. This year’s luncheon was attended by more than 400 supporters who gathered to celebrate LA SED’s 60 years of delivering critical social services, advocacy and support to the Hispanic population and other residents of Southwest Detroit.
Rico Razo, Chief of Home Repair & Neighborhood Services for the City of Detroit, returned as emcee for the luncheon program, and introduced special guest Mayor Mike Duggan. The mayor congratulated LA SED for its commitment to serving the needs of Southwest Detroit residents, particularly those with language and cultural barriers.
This year’s keynote speaker was Curtis Farmer, Chairman and CEO of Comerica, Inc. and Comerica Bank.
Both Mayor Duggan and Mr. Farmer paid tribute to LA SED and other community organizations in Southwest Detroit for immediately stepping up to meet the needs of the residents of Southwest Detroit whose homes were flooded as the result of the huge water main break in mid-February. They acknowledged that the response of the City’s Water Department and the Great Lakes Water Authority would not have been nearly as effective and timely were it not for the generous donations of time and supplies from community organizations and residents of Southwest Detroit.
This year’s luncheon awardees were:
- Ignacio Salazar, recipient of the Board of Directors Award
- Gloria Quesada, Senior of the Year Award
- Jacqueline Valdivia Arevalo, Youth of the Year Award
- Elena Herrada, Volunteer of the Year Award
