The Michigan Wolverine men’s basketball team are the kings of the NCAA college basketball world after an historic finals victory over a tough UConn team by a score of 69 to 63 in Indianapolis, IN on Monday evening, April 6.
The Wolverines were dominant in their first five games in the tournament by scoring 90 or more points and by beating their earlier opponents by double figures. UConn, however, proved to be their toughest opponent and put up a fierce battle to the end. The ACC powerhouse is accustomed to winning at a high level having won the national championship in two of the past four years. But this gritty and talented Michigan team has overcome challenges all season and was not to be denied.
Michigan’s shooting percentage was off in the championship game, but their defense was stifling, causing six UConn turnovers and making six blocked shots. Big Ten Player of the Year power forward Yaxel Lendeborg played through an ankle and knee injury he suffered in the win over Arizona but still scored 13 points in the final while guard Elliot Cadeau was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player with his masterful leadership on the floor and scoring 19 points to lead the Wolverines to their hard fought victory.
Michigan boasts two star players with Hispanic/Latino roots: Center Aday Mara from Spain and Lendeborg who was born in Puerto Rico and moved when he was very young to Ohio and then New Jersey. El equipo de básquetbol masculino de los Michigan Wolverines se coronó como rey del mundo del baloncesto universitario de la NCAA después de una victoria histórica en la final contra un fuerte equipo de UConn, con un marcador de 69 a 63, este lunes 6 de abril en Indianapolis, IN.
Los Wolverines dominaron sus primeros cinco partidos del torneo, anotando 90 puntos o más y venciendo a sus rivales por amplios márgenes. UConn, sin embargo, resultó ser su oponente más difícil, peleando con todo hasta el final. Esta potencia de la ACC está acostumbrada a competir —y ganar— al más alto nivel, con dos campeonatos nacionales en los últimos cuatro años. Pero este equipo de Michigan, aguerrido y talentoso, superó retos durante toda la temporada y no estaba dispuesto a dejar escapar el título.
