New owners of Southwest Detroit music venue aim to take it up a notch

Un popular foro musical de Southwest Detroit está bajo nueva administración y, de ahora en adelante, contará con la empresa de entretenimiento con sede en Los Ángeles AEG Presents para encargarse de toda la programación de conciertos.

Los socios de El Club acordaron una compra que dejó al copropietario Jason Rogalewski a cargo del negocio, al asumir la participación de los dueños originales Eric y Graeme Flegenheimer, e incorporar como socio a Dave Zainea, quien también es copropietario de Garden Bowl, del foro musical The Magic Stick y del Majestic Theater en Midtown Detroit. Lauren McGrier continuará como gerente general, puesto que ocupa desde 2021.

El Club abrió sus puertas en la primavera de 2016 y Rogalewski se sumó como socio en 2019, después de promover conciertos en este foro íntimo y para todas las edades, que anteriormente fue el Mexicantown Fiesta Center. Rogalewski, vicepresidente regional de AEG Presents, dijo que siempre ha tenido un cariño especial por este espacio con capacidad para 500 personas. El Club presenta tanto a talentos locales y nacionales emergentes como a artistas consolidados, con géneros que van del indie rock y el punk hasta la música electrónica y el pop. En 2018, la revista Rolling Stone nombró a El Club como uno de los 10 mejores foros de música en vivo en Estados Unidos.

“Me enamoré del espacio desde la primera vez que vi un concierto ahí”, dijo Rogalewski a Crain’s. “El Club se sentía como una pieza vital del tejido musical de Detroit, especialmente para artistas pequeños y emergentes que necesitaban un lugar para tocar en esos primeros conciertos que ayudan a construir una carrera. El club iba más o menos bien, pero no en lo financiero. Yo quería asegurarme de que saliera adelante”.

Los términos del acuerdo, que se cerró el 3 de noviembre, no fueron revelados. Graeme Flegenheimer no respondió de inmediato a una solicitud de comentarios de Crain’s.

La transición llevaba tiempo en proceso, dijo Rogalewski. Con Graeme Flegenheimer viviendo en Los Ángeles desde hace algunos años y Eric Flegenheimer en Vermont, se volvió difícil para ellos manejar las operaciones diarias de El Club.

Rogalewski declinó compartir cifras de ingresos, pero señaló que El Club ha promediado alrededor de 150 eventos al año. Con la nueva administración y AEG a cargo de toda la programación, proyecta que esa cifra crezca a 200 el próximo año y que mejore el nivel del entretenimiento que se presenta en el foro.

Zainea dijo que le gusta la cercanía que ofrece El Club, ubicado en 4114 Vernor Hwy., y que ha escuchado que a los amantes de la música les agrada la experiencia que brinda el lugar, junto con el ambiente del barrio.

“Lo que escucho en la calle es que a la gente le encanta el sonido. El personal es muy amable”, dijo Zainea. “Esto solo va a mejorar”.

El Club también estará disponible para eventos privados, como bodas, dijo Rogalewski.

“Con base en el calendario y en qué tan adelantadas están las reservaciones, de seis a nueve meses, ya nos vemos muy sólidos”, señaló. “No tenemos el espacio más grande para bodas, pero contamos con un patio al aire libre de buen tamaño, lo cual ayuda mucho para promoverlo como un lugar para fiestas privadas”.

En enero, el nuevo equipo de propietarios reabrirá la cocina, que ha permanecido cerrada desde el inicio de la pandemia de COVID-19 a principios de 2020. Rogalewski y Zainea contratarán a un gerente de cocina de tiempo completo y a personal de medio tiempo. El menú incluirá pizza al horno de leña.

“La gente ha estado preguntando por la comida desde que dejó de haberla”, dijo Rogalewski. “Traer de vuelta la cocina es una gran prioridad”.

Estos cambios se dan después de algunos trabajos de remodelación que se completaron a principios de este año y que le dieron a El Club un diseño más abierto. Zainea fungió como contratista general del proyecto, según Rogalewski. Fue durante ese trabajo que Rogalewski se acercó a Zainea para invitarlo a sumarse como socio en El Club. Ambos han trabajado juntos por más de una década a través de una alianza de promoción entre el Majestic y AEG.

“(Zainea) es hábil, entiende los foros y le importa el ecosistema musical de Detroit”, dijo Rogalewski. “Llevábamos años trabajando juntos. Simplemente tenía sentido”.

Zainea coincidió en que su relación con Rogalewski los convierte en socios fuertes. Señaló que Rogalewski se encarga de impulsar el negocio y que él solo quiere ser parte del equipo para ayudar a desarrollarlo aún más, mientras continúa operando sus otros negocios.

“Voy a muchos conciertos. Llevo mucho tiempo en este negocio”, dijo Zainea. “Solo quiero transferir lo que he aprendido en el Majestic hacia acá”.

McGrier dijo que está entusiasmada con los cambios, incluidos los nuevos sistemas que Zainea está implementando y que mejorarán la contabilidad y el flujo general del negocio.

El club tiene una gran responsabilidad de presentar a la ciudad a la próxima generación de grandes artistas, señaló McGrier.

“Somos un lugar que se siente como en casa, cómodo y acogedor para personas de todos los orígenes, ya sean asistentes o artistas”, escribió McGrier en un email a Crain’s. “Veo a El Club como el ‘Apollo’ de Detroit. Si un artista logra llenar este espacio con una presentación fenomenal, muchas veces da el salto a foros más grandes y a giras mundiales. Esa es la importancia crucial de los espacios pequeños para conciertos. Este foro también permite que los artistas conecten con sus fans de una manera que deja una huella duradera. Además, nos enorgullece ser un punto de partida para quienes están comenzando sus carreras en la industria”.

Rogalewski espera que El Club pueda impulsar más de esas grandes trayectorias. Está tan entusiasmado con los cambios que vienen como aficionado a la música, como lo está en su papel de empresario.

“Estoy más que emocionado. El Club sigue siendo uno de mis lugares favoritos para ver conciertos”, dijo Rogalewski. “Siempre he preferido ver bandas nuevas en foros como este, en esas primeras o segundas veces que pasan por una ciudad, en lugar de conciertos en arenas. En esos espacios tan grandes se pierde mucho. La cercanía de El Club es algo muy especial para mí”.
