U.S. President: Kamala Harris

The 2024 race for president of the United States has been one of “firsts” highlighted by the surprise passing of the torch by President Joe Biden to a younger generation of leadership embodied by his Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz. On the other hand, former president and twice impeached Donald Trump is seeking to return to the office he did everything he could, legally and illegally, to keep despite losing the 2020 election.

In our view, Kamala Harris represents a fresh start to tackling America’s problems, from the economy which is still holding back many Americans, to offering freedom of opportunity and protections of the law that have been stripped away by the radical conservatives appointed by Trump to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Harris has put forth plans to hold down consumer prices by going after corporations that take advantage of consumers by price gouging. She will offer $25,000 downpayment assistance to first time homebuyers – a plan modeled after the one successfully implemented by the City of Detroit. She will offer a $6,000 tax credit to families with children to help defray expenses in their first year, and she will boost the tax deduction for start up businesses from $5,000 to a more realistic and helpful $50,000.

These are real proposals put forth by the Harris-Walz campaign that will make a real difference in the lives of all Americans.

Donald Trump, for his part, offers no real solutions but would rather denigrate Americans who do not support him. He has gone as far as to kill the bipartisan legislation that would have had a measurable impact on addressing the crisis at the southern border. Trump paints immigrants with one broad brush as being rapists, thieves and murderers – something we in our community know is untrue and slanderous. And, lest we overlook the latest insults, he came to Detroit to trash our reputation in our own community! And, just this week, a speaker at Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden in New York City referred to Puerto Rico as “an island of floating garbage.” Neither Trump nor any speaker who came after denounced that statement. Enough is enough.

Trump’s supporters forget or choose to overlook the way he completely mishandled the pandemic saying that “it will go away on its own” and suggesting that we should inject bleach into our veins to kill the virus. His response to the pandemic was inept from the beginning and it tanked our economy and resulted in more than a million American deaths.

Trump takes his lead from his allies on the far right who have mapped out their plan for a second Trump administration in a 920 page document called Project 2025. The plan calls for “mass deportation” of immigrants which will result in inhumane family separations once again and elimination of the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency. Trump could not care less about protecting women’s reproductive rights, voting rights or our environment. EL CENTRAL has covered the threats represented by Project 2025 through an analysis of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and we encourage our readers to learn more about it at https://lulac.org/project_2025/.

The choice is clear: A vote for Kamala Harris is a vote for a renewed America, one where all people have an equal opportunity to buy a home, feed their families, afford quality health care and a good education, and all the things they need to get ahead. We at EL CENTRAL agree, we won’t go back!

U.S. Senate: Elissa Slotkin

Three-term U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin has earned a reputation as a fair-minded, Democrat who advocates fiercely for her constituents in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. As a CIA and Pentagon official, she has the experience to weigh in on national security and foreign policy issues. She has fought the pharmaceutical industry to control medication costs like $35 insulin and $2,000 annual spending caps for seniors and will fight to make those reforms universal. We have no confidence that her rival for the Senate seat, Mike Rogers, would side with consumers over big pharma.

We urge a vote for Elissa Slotkin to keep a consumer advocate and foreign policy expert in the Senate representing Michigan.

Michigan Supreme Court: Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas

Two positions on the Michigan Supreme Court are on the Non-Partisan portion of the ballot in Michigan. The candidates are nominated by their political parties, but that affiliation is not noted beneath their names. We encourage Michigan voters to educate themselves on the backgrounds of the candidates and choose the individuals who they feel will represent their values and priorities.

We believe that the cases to be decided by the Michigan Supreme Court in the near future will require justices to have demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting reproductive rights of women and voting rights for all.

EL CENTRAL supports Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas for Michigan Supreme Court.
