Belize, with its colorful cities and towns, islands and beaches, is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. However, Spanish is spoken by more than half the population, as are Belizean Creole English, Garifuna, and Belizean Mayan. Belize borders Mexico and Guatemala.

The country’s current territory has been inhabited since 1500 BC by the Maya, later influenced by Europeans from 1492, initially by the Spanish, and subsequently by the British after their victory at the Battle of St. George’s Caye in 1798. Although it has been considered an independent country since 1981, it remains a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, which makes it dependent on the British monarchy.

Its capital was Belize City, home to the country’s most important Catholic cathedral, the Holy Redeemer Cathedral. Although the capital is currently the city of Belmopan.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker or Cayo Corker in Spanish, is the name of one of the small islands in the maritime territory of Belize. It is known for its reefs, where diving to enjoy the marine wonders is the perfect respite from the monotony of city life, where winter can be harsh.

Caye Caulker boasts a colorful village where spring and festivity reign, thanks to the tranquility that emanates from the bohemian and welcoming atmosphere of this small island, measuring 8 km by 2 km.

Caye Caulker is a place to refresh with new friendships. People tends to visit in times when the can’t slow down in their own life, until they visit Caye Caulker, since the motto of the city is “go slow”.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, with a population of 2,000. Ambergris Caye boasts one of the most famous beaches, San Pedro, with its white Caribbean sand.

Hiking along the island, which is only 45 miles long, allows you to explore the entire territory in a week.

Like most of Belize’s marine territory, diving is a major activity on Ambergris Caye, not only for its beauty but also because it is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world.

It is common to find areas where you can swim with nurse sharks. Although it may seem like a scary idea, the experience is not distressing, as nurse sharks do not attack humans.

Another popular activity on Ambergris Caye is fishing for tarpon, bonefish, and pompano.

Breadfruit

Breadfruit is a fruit native to coastal regions and is prepared in various ways in Belize. It has a spongy, starchy texture similar to that of a potato. It can be used to make bread by drying and grinding it into flour. It can also be fried as a potato.

It is a staple food in the regions where it grows because the fruit can be used at all stages of its development.

Belice
