Michigan-Canada bridge delay could cost up to $7M per week

Informe: el retraso del puente Michigan–Canadá podría costar hasta 7 millones de dólares por semana

  • Las pérdidas directas por retrasar la apertura del Gordie Howe International Bridge en Detroit podrían alcanzar los 7 millones de dólares por semana, según un nuevo estudio.

Retrasar la apertura del Gordie Howe International Bridge entre Michigan y Canadá podría costarle a la autoridad del puente y a los contribuyentes un total combinado de 7 millones de dólares por semana, según un nuevo análisis.

Las conclusiones del Anderson Economic Group, con sede en East Lansing, se dan luego de que el presidente Donald Trump amenazara con bloquear la apertura, exigiendo que Canadá acepte una serie de demandas no especificadas, mientras ambos países se preparan para renegociar un amplio acuerdo comercial a finales de este año.

De acuerdo con el informe de AEG, publicado el jueves por la mañana, la Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority podría perder 5 millones de dólares por semana si el proyecto se retrasa, mientras que el costo para los contribuyentes por las plazas aduanales relacionadas sumaría otros 2 millones de dólares en pérdidas.

“Estos son costos directos e inevitables del retraso”, dijo Patrick Anderson, autor del estudio y exsubdirector de presupuesto durante la administración del gobernador republicano John Engler.

Sin embargo, advirtió Anderson, el alcance de las pérdidas podría ir mucho más allá.

Los costos directos “son solo una fracción de los costos para la industria automotriz, así como para la agricultura, el turismo y otras industrias que dependen de un cruce eficiente de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y Canadá”, señaló Anderson.

El puente, que conectará Detroit con Windsor, sería una arteria económica vital entre ambos países, sumándose al Ambassador Bridge en la ciudad más grande de Michigan.

El puente Gordie Howe ha estado en construcción desde 2018 y se espera que abra pronto. Canadá está cubriendo todos los costos iniciales del puente, que será propiedad compartida con Michigan.

Al citar preocupaciones sobre aranceles a productos lácteos de Estados Unidos, boicots a licores fabricados en Estados Unidos y las negociaciones comerciales de Canadá con China, Trump advirtió que no permitiría que el puente se abra “hasta que Estados Unidos sea plenamente compensado por todo lo que hemos dado (a Canadá)”.

Si el puente se retrasa, “gran parte de la carga recaerá sobre prestamistas, empresas y contribuyentes canadienses”, dijo Anderson. “Sin embargo, los contribuyentes en Estados Unidos y los residentes del estado de Michigan, que bajo el International Crossing Agreement serán propietarios del 50% del puente, también asumirán parte del costo”.

“Como estadounidenses, necesitamos apoyarnos en esta relación y fortalecerla para mantener nuestra competitividad global y crear empleos y crecimiento económico”.

Baruah calificó el puente como “el proyecto de infraestructura más trascendental de esta generación en el estado y la región”.

Anderson coincidió.

“Los costos potenciales de un retraso, aunque significativos, también son una fracción mínima del valor del puente”, dijo. “Por esta y otras razones, seguimos confiando en su viabilidad económica incluso si su apertura se retrasa”.

El análisis de AEG tiene limitaciones, señaló Anderson, incluida la falta de tarifas de peaje publicadas y los costos para que U.S. Customs opere su plaza en el sitio.
