All Saints Literacy Center will host a community open house Tuesday, Aug. 11, inviting residents to learn about its free adult literacy and English-language tutoring programs while connecting with volunteers, learners and community partners.

The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the center, 3553 W. Vernor Hwy., Suite D, in Southwest Detroit. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the facility, meet Executive Director Grace Irwin, hear a brief presentation beginning at 5:45 p.m., enjoy light refreshments and network with others who support adult education in the community.

Founded in 2015, All Saints Literacy Center provides free, one-on-one English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring for adults. The nonprofit also provides GED preparation support and plans to expand its programming with the return of group ESL and digital literacy classes. Since opening its doors, the organization has served more than 500 adult learners with the support of more than 200 volunteer tutors.

Irwin said the center’s individualized tutoring model sets it apart from many traditional language programs. Instead of learning in a classroom setting, participants are paired one-on-one with trained volunteer tutors who meet with them in person or virtually, allowing lessons to fit around work schedules, family responsibilities and other commitments.

“The one-on-one model really allows us to provide individualized instruction to the learners,” Irwin said. “We try to have a very welcoming environment and foster relationships between tutors and learners so they can have a good learning experience.”

The center welcomes adults at all English proficiency levels. Before beginning instruction, learners complete reading, listening and speaking assessments to determine the appropriate level in a six-level curriculum aligned with national adult education standards.

Volunteer tutors play a central role in the program. According to Irwin, tutors come from a variety of backgrounds, including retirees, college students, certified teachers and individuals preparing for careers in English-language instruction. The center provides training, and previous teaching experience is not required. Adults interested in volunteering must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be willing to learn tutoring strategies.

Irwin said the Aug. 11 open house is intended to introduce the organization to the broader community and encourage new volunteers and prospective learners to get involved.

Residents interested in becoming volunteer tutors can apply through the All Saints Literacy Center website. Adults interested in enrolling as learners can call 313-635-4549 or email info@allsaintsliteracy.org to learn more about the program and join the waiting list.
