Candidato a la alcaldía de Detroit: Solomon Kinloch

Si el reverendo Solomon Kinloch Jr. gana las elecciones, promete unir y convocar a las partes interesadas más importantes y, al mismo tiempo, garantizar que las empresas cumplan sus promesas.

Esta es la última de nuestra serie de entrevistas sobre las prioridades políticas de los aspirantes a la alcaldía.

  • Están surgiendo más candidatos para reemplazar a Mike Duggan, el único alcalde que hasta ahora ha liderado la ciudad en su recuperación posterior a la quiebra.
  • La carrera no partidista tiene sus primarias en agosto y las elecciones generales en noviembre.

Historia: Kinloch lidera la Iglesia Triumph con sede en Detroit, que tenía alrededor de 50 miembros cuando comenzó como pastor en 1998. Bajo su liderazgo, la iglesia estima que ha aumentado a 40.000 miembros en sus ubicaciones en Detroit, Flint, Southfield y otras ubicaciones.

  • Además de los servicios religiosos habituales, las ofertas de Triumph incluyen becas y talleres financieros y de salud mental.
  • Durante la pandemia, la iglesia proporcionó computadoras portátiles gratuitas para los estudiantes, vacunas, alimentos y paquetes de ayuda.

Noticias: Kinloch habló con Axios Detroit sobre sus objetivos como alcalde, su capacidad para unificar y por qué postularse desde fuera de la política tradicional podría ser una ventaja.

  • Muchas personas son escépticas con respecto a los políticos institucionales, comentó, lo que lleva a personas como él a postularse para un cargo para convertirse en el líder que quieren ver, en lugar de esperarlo.

Un acercamiento: la vivienda es primordial, dijo el pastor. Quiere agregar 10,000 unidades de vivienda más en la ciudad. Entre las áreas de enfoque estaría la vivienda asequible, uso de materiales y tecnología innovadora y un programa de asistencia para el pago de la prima, para promover la propiedad de la vivienda.

Además, la construcción de viviendas se conecta con otra de las misiones de Kinloch: capacitación laboral, oficios especializados y aumentar las oportunidades económicas. Quiere expandir los programas de capacitación de la fuerza laboral existentes y “no solo retener a nuestra clase media, sino que queremos seguir atrayendo y haciendo crecer nuestra clase media y alta”.

  • También hizo hincapié en la financiación de las pequeñas empresas y ha dicho que quiere añadir 10 tiendas de alimentos más en la ciudad, para aumentar el acceso a la alimentación.

Kinloch también cree que su administración podría hacer un mejor trabajo aprovechando los recursos públicos y privados y convocando a líderes filantrópicos, incluso en el ámbito de la educación. El alcalde no preside las escuelas públicas, pero el bienestar de los jóvenes sigue siendo su responsabilidad, dijo.

  • “Tener una situación en la que nuestras escuelas no estén produciendo lo mejor para nuestros jóvenes ya no es una opción”, dijo.

Contexto: Si es elegido, Kinloch no planea dejar de liderar Triumph, una vía a través de la cual escucha a miles de personas.

  • También dijo en su discurso de inauguración que sería un alcalde para los habitantes de Detroit de todas las razas e identidades.
  • Cuando se le preguntó sobre las creencias de Triumph en su sitio web contra el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo, dijo que no se postula para alcalde como pastor y que defendería la igualdad de protección ante la ley. Si bien las personas tienen derecho a sus opiniones religiosas, no tienen derecho a imponer sus creencias a los demás, dijo.

Situación actual: Uno de los temas de su campaña será la gran empresa y la comunidad, es decir, equilibrar los variados intereses y necesidades de quienes afectan y se ven afectados por la evolución del panorama de Detroit.

  • Kinloch compartió que el próximo alcalde debe ser un unificador y un luchador, y que puede y ha logrado superar esa brecha.
  • “Las empresas necesitan saber que Detroit sigue abierta a los negocios… La diferencia es que mi administración garantizaría que, si se le hace una promesa a nuestra gente, deben cumplirla”.

En resumen: Le preguntamos a Kinloch sobre una cualidad que aportaría como alcalde que sea diferente a las que tienen otros candidatos y el alcalde actual. Dijo:

  • “El ministerio se trata de la gente. Y.… el negocio de la ciudad, el gobierno, debe ser sobre la gente”.
  • “Creo que eso es lo que me hace especial, porque he estado en primera línea. No me han dado nada… Tuve que construir, tuve que reclutar, tuve que liderar. Tuve que ser creativo. Tuve que inspirar esperanza. El próximo líder tiene que ser alguien que pueda inspirar esperanza”.
