Wayne State University President Kimberly Andrews Espy, Ph.D. formally took the presidential oath of office on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023 during a ceremony in the Student Center Ballroom. The Honorable Eric L. Clay of the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit administered the traditional oath of office to President Espy who officially began serving as Wayne State’s 13th president on Aug. 1. She is the first woman to serve in the role in the institution’s history.

The Wayne State University Board of Governors voted unanimously on June 30 to elect Dr. Espy as president following a national search. She succeeds M. Roy Wilson, who held the role for the last decade.

Mark Gaffney, chair of the Board of Governors and chair of the presidential search committee, served as the event’s master of ceremonies. Speakers delivered remarks on behalf of the board, the faculty, the student body, the administration, alumni and the search committee.

After the official swearing-in ceremony, President Espy shared brief remarks and greeted guests and supporters at a reception attended by Wayne State University students and faculty and community leaders.
