Entrevista a Fred Durhal III por la candidatura a la alcaldía de Detroit

Si el miembro del Consejo Municipal Fred Durhal III se convierte en el próximo alcalde, implementaría una “calle principal” en cada distrito.

En general: Esta es la tercera de nuestra serie de entrevistas que analizan las prioridades políticas de los candidatos a la alcaldía. Los primeros fueron Mary Sheffield y Saunteel Jenkins.

  • Es prematuro aún para saber quién sucederá al alcalde Mike Duggan, el cual lleva tres mandatos, lo que significa que cualquier candidato aún puede marcar la diferencia al atraer donadores y votantes.
  • La carrera no partidista tiene sus primarias en agosto y las elecciones generales en noviembre.

Historia: Durhal y sus partidarios ven la historia de los nacidos en Detroit, en Lansing como un trampolín para lograr cambios en la ley, a nivel estatal y oportunidades de financiación para su ciudad.

  • Durhal fue representante estatal de 2015 a 2019, cuando se ocupó de cuestiones presupuestarias en el Comité de Asignaciones de la Cámara, antes de postularse para el Concejo Municipal en 2021.
  • Su padre, Fred Durhal Jr., también es un ex representante estatal y se postuló para alcalde en 2013.

Noticias: Durhal habló con Axios Detroit sobre sus objetivos políticos, incluida la reforma fiscal, la reconstrucción de vecindarios y el transporte regional.

  • Quiere ver una “reforma fiscal integral”, que compense las considerables cargas de impuesto a la propiedad para los residentes y las empresas, sin obligar a la ciudad a reducir sus ingresos. También apuntaría a agilizar los permisos y otros procesos para facilitar la realización de negocios.
  • Uno de sus principales objetivos es expandir los principales corredores comerciales en cada uno de los distritos de la ciudad para hacer que los vecindarios sean más densos, deseables y transitables, lo que implica viviendas asequibles y vías para la propiedad de la vivienda.

Acercamiento: “Queremos aumentar la transitabilidad en nuestras comunidades, donde la gente tenga acceso a alimentos frescos, tenga acceso a una farmacia a una milla de su casa, pero esos corredores comerciales también crearán un entorno para las pequeñas empresas”, dijo. “Las pequeñas empresas son catalizadores para crear riqueza generacional”.

  • Para ayudar a financiar el crecimiento del corredor, apuntaría a expandir la Autoridad de Desarrollo del Centro, que recauda impuestos para apoyar el desarrollo y el crecimiento empresarial, “cambiando la definición y sus límites para que se alimenten a nuestros corredores comerciales”.

Trabajar con los gobiernos a nivel de condado para impulsar los planes de tránsito regional es una prioridad para hacer de Detroit una ciudad de clase mundial, según Durhal.

  • “Queremos asegurarnos de aumentar la eficiencia del DDOT, asegurarnos de que los autobuses funcionen a tiempo, mejorar la experiencia del pasajero”, así como poner más autobuses en las calles y aumentar el salario de los conductores”, dice.

Su administración se sumergiría en la seguridad pública, buscando una solución de financiación sostenible para los esfuerzos de intervención de la ciudad contra la violencia comunitaria.

Actualidad: Una de las temáticas de su campaña, será la gran empresa y la comunidad, equilibrando los variados intereses y necesidades de quienes afectan y se ven afectados por la evolución del panorama de Detroit.

  • Sobre esto, Durhal dice: “Hay que ser sensible a la comunidad empresarial y a nuestra comunidad en su conjunto… No me he disculpado por apoyar los incentivos fiscales, porque mi creencia fundamental es la creación de empleo. La gente dice que es el centro de la ciudad versus los barrios, cuando en realidad todos somos un Detroit y necesitamos ambos para prosperar.
  • “Pero queremos que la gente sienta que esta ciudad también es para ellos, que pueden visitar el centro y también poder vivir en barrios seguros y limpios”.

En resumen: cuando se le preguntó sobre una cualidad que aporta y que lo hace único entre los otros candidatos, Durhal dijo:

  • “Seré el único candidato en esta carrera que puede decir que sirvió en la Alcaldía y en la Legislatura estatal, y eso viene acompañado de mucha construcción de coaliciones”. Hizo hincapié en trabajar tanto con demócratas como con republicanos.
  • “Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, devolveremos un ambiente más familiar al gobierno de la ciudad”, añadió el padre de dos hijos.
