Michigan Central Opening Concert Lights Up Detroit’s Future

Michigan Central and Roosevelt Park’s historic rebirth speaks to and reflects the future of Detroit. The momentum is with us! It was palpable Thursday night, June 6, as Detroit’s finest lit up an exhilarating stage for a free, once-in-a-lifetime night of pure celebration. Diana Ross was as supreme and exquisite as ever, kicking off a show that also included unforgettable performances from Eminem, Big Sean, The Clark Sisters, Jack White, Slum Village, Common, Fantasia, Jelly Roll, Melissa Etheridge – and quite a few others! Joining them on stage were local icons like Barry Sanders, Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Judge Greg Mathis, Jalen Rose, actor/comedian Sam Richardson and actor Taylor Lautner – to name a few.

All that talent was certainly impressive, but it wouldn’t have been complete without thousands of Detroiters from every neighborhood – especially Southwest Detroit and Corktown – throwing all their joy into it.

Kudos to executive-producers Eminem and Paul Rosenberg, and congratulations to the Ford Family for making Michigan Central once again a world class building with a deep purpose.

We celebrated the re-opening of Roosevelt Park this same time one year ago. City of Detroit Chief Operating Officer Brad Dick (then Dep. Director of General Services Department) led that incredible effort and the re-design couldn’t have been more perfect for a concert like this.
