Few unforgettable moments change the trajectory of our lives and our communities, such as completing a high school and college degree.  According to the State of Michigan School Data, Michiganders with bachelor’s degrees earn a median wage of $63,100 five years after graduation, while those with high school diplomas earn a median wage of $29,700. This gap gets wider for people who do not complete their high school degree and earn a master’s or doctoral degree. Even though I graduated from a high school in Texas, I also heard these types of figures and though, wow, I can earn so much more money, but how am I going to get admitted let alone graduate from college?

Admittedly, for many of our community members, those questions are still present. Well, the good news is that help is not only within your grasp, but free and available. One example is the agency Michigan Hispanic Collaborative (MiHC) whose strategy to help the Hispanic community achieve their educational goals includes providing bilingual-individualized support with the college admissions process and through the college journey for Hispanic families in Michigan. I asked MiHC’s leaders how does MiHC help families navigate the college access system, help families make the best use of time, and reiterate the message that, “nobody is born knowing everything?” I encourage you to review the insight provided by, Western High School graduate, Dr. Vanessa Reynold’s, MiHC Director of College Admissions & Success and Amanda Said Canto, MiHC  Acting Executive Director & Chief of Staff.

How does MiHC help students with “Starting on the right foot?”

MiHC starts conversations about college early, engaging scholars and their families well before the application process begins. This ensures that scholars understand the requirements and are properly prepared when the time comes, setting them up for success from the start.

How does MiHC help students understand that “Nobody is born knowing everything?”

Recognizing that no one starts out knowing it all, MiHC provides scholars with the right information at the right time. As an MiHC scholar, if you don’t ask for help—MiHC will be there every step of the way, offering guidance and support as scholars access college opportunities and pursue a four-year degree!

How does MiHC reinforce the message “Time is of the essence?”

MiHC aligns coaching and content with key milestones, ensuring that scholars stay on track and have the resources they need at critical moments. We also preserve work time for scholars to focus on essential tasks, empowering students to stay ahead and meet their goals efficiently.

Throughout my life, I have heard a Spanish saying, (loosely translated) that says, “There is not a harder battle, than the battle not fought.” In the quest to support our students to reach their potential, we are not alone. Partnering with MiHC and support programs within our schools, and colleges the battle will be won. Dr. Reynolds stated, “Personally, I am passionate about this work because I too was a first- generation Western International High School graduate; I know the barriers our students face. Not only have I been there, but I have overcome all the challenges, and I want to empower our scholars to reach their best potential. Like Dr. Reynolds, MiHC and I are here to elevate our Próxima Generación (the next generation. Join Us!

Her passions are addressing systemic barriers that preclude student success and educating her community about how to achieve academic and professional success.

¡Únete a nosotros!
