The Amazon: Tropical Forest

The Amazon rainforest is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Amazon is the ecoregion that runs along the Amazon River in South America, the latter being the largest river on the planet and which runs through nine countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

There are many debates among scientists who seek to investigate the origin of the Amazon River, some of whom have defined it as being in a region in southern Peru. What is clear is that it flows into the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil.

Since a large part of its length is located below the equator, during the second half of the year it goes through what would be its summer and autumn season, because while in the North we experience winter in the months of December and January, there they experience summer.

It is known that there are a large number of indigenous communities and peoples who not only live, but whose survival depends on the ecological balance of the region. Many of these communities are great environmental protectors, which has led them to have great conflicts with oil companies from around the world that seek to take advantage of natural resources.

The Amazon is also one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity on the planet, with one in ten known animal species on the planet being found there. Some of these are the pink dolphins, jaguars, howler monkeys, black caimans, toucans, macaws, anaconda, glass frogs, milk frogs, among others.

In the case of the pink dolphin, endemic to the Amazon, the drought and pollution of the river has put it at risk of extinction.

The Amazon macroregion is considered one of the most important forests that act as lungs for planet Earth, as they are responsible for the absorption of carbon dioxide to convert it into oxygen.

The Amazon plays a crucial role for life on our planet, as it is not only where a large amount of oxygen is generated, but it also acts as a climate regulator.

Currently, one of the major problems facing the Amazon is the deforestation of its territory for agriculture, livestock and oil companies. Taking advantage of the dry seasons to take over the recently burned territory.
