Bolivia

Bolivia

Bolivia is one of the South American countries that showcases vast cultural wealth, as well as a great diversity of ecosystems ranging from the Amazon rainforest, the desert regions of Uyuni, the mountainous areas, and the Andean region.

The Tiwanaku archaeological site, built in 400 BC, was the center of the Tiwanaku civilization, a pre-Incan culture. The city of Tiwanaku is characterized by its architecture decorated with reliefs and incised planes placed on stelae; it is composed of seven important architectural structures: Kalasasaya, a semi-subterranean temple, the Akapana pyramid, the Gate of the Sun, Puma Punku, and a temple, as well as large pyramids and sculptures.

Bolivia is also home to the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, where the salt water bodies make sunsets look breathtaking. Bolivia shares Lake Titicaca with Peru, which sits at an altitude of 3,812 meters above sea level and has an estimated depth of 104 meters, making it the highest navigable lake in the world.

Its most famous dish is Silpancho, which consists of rice, thickly sliced fried potatoes, breaded beef steak, a fried egg, and is accompanied by a salad of tomato, onion, and locoto (a type of chili pepper from the Andean region).

Basilica of the Virgin of Candelaria of Copacabana

On the shores of Lake Titicaca, in the city of Copacabana, lies the Basilica of the Virgin of Candelaria of Copacabana. The Basilica was built between 1550 and 1679 in a Moorish Renaissance architectural style. However, the image of the Virgin of Candelaria was not placed in the chapel until 1583.

The Virgin of Candelaria of Copacabana is known as the crowned queen of Bolivia, and her festivities are celebrated the first week of February, in commemoration of Candlemas Day on February 2.

The sculpture depicting the Virgin of Candelaria, also known as the Dark Virgin, was sculpted around 1576 by the grandson of Inca Túpac Yupanqui, the artist Francisco Tito Yupanqui.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria in Copacabana has an open-air arcade area known as the Open Chapel, which has been used for open-air masses and religious celebrations when the number of parishioners exceeded the church’s capacity.

It is said that around 1576, some fishermen were caught in a storm on Lake Titicaca. Out of desperation, they began to pray and ask the gods. However, the Virgin Mary appeared to them and guided them to safety.

They decided to build a sanctuary for her worship in gratitude for the favor she had granted them. News of the great miracles granted by Our Lady of Candelaria spread throughout Bolivia and even Peru, leading many faithful to visit her year after year.
