How to honor Cinco de Mayo in the United States?

Para La Red Hispana

Cinco de Mayo is one of the great heroic feats of the Mexican people, a symbolic date that honors the victory of General Ignacio Zaragoza – who by the way was born in what is now Goliad, Texas – against the invading French army in the state of Puebla in 1862.

I write these lines precisely from Puebla, the birthplace of my family in the northern mountains of the state, where year after year the heroic deed is remembered with parades and school dances. The smiling faces of those children rekindled my hope that the best for Mexico and Mexicans, wherever they live, is yet to come.

In the United States, the celebration of the Battle of Puebla has become a celebration of Hispanicity, a recognition of the common roots that connect us to the core and of the unique contributions of Hispanic men and women to culture, to the economy and diversity of the United States.

And of course a great opportunity to delight in the gastronomic monument that is Mexican cuisine, especially legendary native dishes such as mole poblano.

But this year the memory of Cinco de Mayo has a special connotation because it takes place in an election year, both in the June 2 elections in Mexico and in the November 5 elections in the United States.

At the time, Presidents Benito Juárez and Abraham Lincoln faced existential challenges for the integrity and future of their nations.

Today our challenges are different, but no less transcendent. In Mexico we have great challenges to provide security and well-being to citizens. The United States faces the challenge of overcoming adverse economic conditions for millions and, on the other hand, confronting real threats to the democratic process.

Like the patriots of the Battle of Puebla, Mexicans must set a new example of patriotism through our civic and electoral participation in both the United States and Mexico.

And he stressed “civic participation” because even those people who are not eligible to vote can be part of the democratic party, encouraging their relatives or friends who can vote, to give them a voice with their vote.

Of course, this call must be extended to all Hispanics in the United States, who still have a long way to go to achieve the happy “parity”, that is, our population strength is equal to or more than our economic power.

Along these lines we have never supported any particular party or candidate, although our preferences may be obvious. This year is no exception.

It’s time to participate and vote. All voices matter – even those who cannot vote – and every vote counts. Your vote is not just your voice. It is our collective voice.
