Congratulations to LA SED for another successful Recognition Luncheon held Thursday, May 2 at the MGM Grand Detroit. Attended by over 400 people, the luncheon is a wonderful way to celebrate community members that have made an impact in our Southwest Detroit community.
Rico Razo, Chief of Home Repair & Neighborhood Services for the City of Detroit, returned as emcee for the luncheon program, and introduced special guest Mayor Mike Duggan. The mayor congratulated LA SED for its commitment to serving the needs of Southwest Detroit residents, particularly those with language and cultural barriers. He noted that LA SED stepped up in a big way to deliver urgently needed health education, screening and vaccination services throughout the pandemic.
This year’s keynote speaker was Jerry Norcia, Chairman and CEO of DTE Energy. Due to an unexpected conflict in Norcia’s schedule which prevented him from being at the luncheon in person, a video tape was shown where he was interviewed by Jane C. Garcia, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of LA SED. Garcia explored with Norcia various aspects of DTE’s commitment to serving the community, particularly what the company is doing to minimize power outages and provide financial support to continue services to low-income households.
This year’s luncheon awardees were:
- Bruce Simpson, Ombudsman, City of Detroit, recipient of the Board of Directors Award
- Margaret Hooker, Senior of the Year Award
- Juan de Dios Gutierrez-Santos, Youth of the Year Award
