Are you ready for some Fútbol?

The Queretaro FC soccer team from Mexico is coming to Southwest Detroit July 12-14 to try out players for their team in Mexico and to provide instruction for youths looking to put their best feet forward on and off the field.

The event is open to youths 12 to 18 years old and of all skill levels. Players will be grouped by age and skill level and receive individual instruction, chat with former players and get a chance to be seen not only by the team but scouts from area schools looking for talent.

“Soccer is an expensive sport,” organizer Anthony Bernal said. “It unfortunately leaves a behind a lot of kids.”

Bernal expects at least 70 youths to participate during the event at the Kemeny Recreation Center complex on Fort Street. Organizers are helping to defray costs with vouchers and event sponsorships.

“We are not selling false hopes, Bernal, 31 and of Farmington Hills, said. “The bar is high. We are giving opportunities to the kids to learn life skills. It is more than becoming a pro player.”

Workshops will emphasize the need to practice, stay out of trouble, attend classes and make good decisions, he said. The discipline needed to do well on the feed translates off the field in doing well in life, he said.

“Discipline on and off the field is necessary,” Bernal said. “In order to be successful in life, you need to have discipline.”

Nathan Romero particpated in the Gallos Blancos camp in 2023

Jesse Venegas’ family owns The Ideal Group in Southwest Detroit and is a sponsor of the event. He said he wanted to make sure the participants had access to instruction usually offered at expensive camps.

“All the big clubs do events, but always outside of Detroit and they are always expensive,” he said. “The goal is to get people who couldn’t afford it together with high level instructors.”

The organizers tried to get the event together last year but were not able to pull it off. Instead, they sent Nathan Romero, a student at Western International High School to Mexico for a week of individual training.

Romero, now 17 years old, said seeing other youths there doing their own laundry, making meals and embracing the ability to make their own decisions influenced him to follow suit.

“You have to be responsible for yourself,” he said. “You have to take charge of yourself. You are going to have eyes on you for your whole life. Make sure you are on top of things.”

For information about the event, visit www.gallosblancosdetroit.com. Early registration is offered at a 40 percent discount until May 31.

Querétaro Fútbol Club, also known as “Gallos Blancos de Querétaro”, is a professional Mexican soccer club based in the city of Querétaro, Mexico, founded on July 8, 1950. The Club currently contests the MX League, the country’s main soccer competition. Its colors are blue, black and white and the mascot is a rooster.

“Desafortunadamente, deja atrás a muchos niños”.

Nathan Romero particpated in the Gallos Blancos camp in 2023
