Urban Neighborhood Initiatives (UNI) kicked off its Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship on August 21, marking the launch of Michigan’s first registered apprenticeship program in this field. The inaugural cohort of eight apprentices—many of whom have grown within UNI’s own youth programs—embarks on a journey that blends formal training, mentorship, and hands-on experience. This groundbreaking program not only invests in the professional growth of future youth leaders but also strengthens UNI’s mission to empower young people and build thriving communities across Detroit.
“We are thrilled to pioneer this innovative apprenticeship in Michigan,” said Vania Ruiz, Sr. Director of UNI’s Youth Workforce Development and Education “This program represents our deep commitment to investing in the next generation of youth development professionals. By combining hands-on experience with formal training and mentorship, we are equipping these apprentices with the skills and knowledge they need to excel and make a lasting impact on the lives of young people in our community.”
The Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship is designed to provide comprehensive training in best practices, foster skill development, and offer structured mentorship opportunities. The eight apprentices selected for this first cohort have a strong background in youth development. Many began as participants in UNI’s youth programs and have since become leaders and program coordinators. The apprenticeship will build upon their existing experience.
UNI is also seeking dedicated volunteers to serve as mentors for the apprentices. Volunteers will meet with their mentee 2–3 hours per week, on a flexible schedule, over the course of 12 months. Those interested in becoming a mentor are encouraged to contact Janice Gates at JGates@unidetroit.org
Program Highlights:
- Comprehensive Curriculum: Training in key areas such as positive youth development, program planning, facilitation, and career pathway development.
- Hands-on Experience: Apprentices will apply their learning through direct service, program implementation, and community engagement.
- Mentorship: Guidance and support from experienced youth development professionals.
- Career Advancement: The apprenticeship provides a pathway for advancement in the youth development field.
