It seems impossible that twenty years have passed since Detroit hosted Super Bowl XL. The mayor was Kilpatrick,the governor was Granholm, and Ford Field was three years old. Detroit rolled out the red carpet and showcased world-class hospitality. Pre-game music with Dr. John, India Arie, John Legend, Aretha Franklin, Joss Stone, and Stevie Wonder. The halftime show, featuring Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones was epic. The pregame show was dominated by Detroit “Motown” talent, and the halftime show featured British talent.
The Steelers defeated the Seahawks 21 – 10. The game was outstanding, with the stands heavily salted with the “Terrible Towels” of the Steelers. The outcome saw Mackenzie High School’s Jerome Bettis, aka THE BUS, earn a RING. Super Bowl XVI at the Silver Dome in 1982 proved that a city in the North could host a comfortable venue for the game. Super Bowl XL in 2006 let Detroit shine, display its talent, architecture, downtown, and culture. Roger Penske chaired the host committee, and the rest is history.
Super Bowl LX is Sunday, February 8. Kickoff 6:30 p.m. Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots in San Francisco, California.
