Detroit artist Sixto Rodriguez was honored with MALDEF’s distinguished Lifetime Achievement – Excellence in the Arts (Posthumous Award) at the organization’s 2024 Chicago Awards Gala on June 13 for his commitment to human rights and social justice through the performing arts.
Traveling to Chicago to accept the award on Rodriguez’s behalf were his daughters Sandra Rodriguez Kennedy, Regan Rodriguez Barachkov and friend and colleague Elton Monroy Duran
Inspired by his upbringing in a working class, immigrant family in Southwest Detroit, Rodriguez’s music broadcasted anti-establishment and social justice themes. The singer also directly advocated for justice and progress in his community and instilled in his daughters a deep commitment to equality. In South Africa, his work was hugely popular amongst those against apartheid, inspiring them to continue to stand for reform.
Founded in 1968, MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) is the nation’s leading Latino legal civil rights organization. The organization is committed to protect and defend the rights of all Latinos living in the United States and the constitutional rights of all Americans.
MALDEF hosts four annual awards galas in Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Antonio, and Los Angeles. The purpose of the galas is to celebrate the accomplishments of trailblazers in the Latino Community, and to come together as a community to inspire those in the room to continue to do the amazing work they are doing to improve the quality of life for Latinos in the United States. The galas are typically attended by the friends and family of the honoree, law firms, university leadership, other prominent members of the Latino community, and youth that will become the leaders of tomorrow.
