DETROIT—Only 18% of voters participated in the 2021 municipal election. With critical decisions ahead in 2025, Detroiters have to be engaged. CitizenDetroit, a nonpartisan civic organization, has partnered with Politics on the Go (POGO), an innovative, tech-driven solution to engage and mobilize young voters, and Activate Detroit, an organization that supports DetroitVotes.org to reach Detroit voters before the 2025 primary and general elections.
Together, they will identify and engage Detroit voters with compelling content online and in-person events geared towards increasing voter education and participation. Through their website, CitizenDetroit.org, and the POGO online platform, Detroiters can hear from every candidate on the Detroit ballot on where they stand on the issues. The candidate videos, available in multiple languages are unedited and unfiltered.
“We can’t ask people to get engaged if we aren’t willing to help them be informed,” Sheila Cockrel, founder of CitizenDetroit, said. “Detroit’s future is not guaranteed, and it is crucial for Detroiters to make informed decisions and elect leaders equipped to handle the changes ahead.”
“Ensuring candidate videos are available with Spanish subtitles extends a welcoming hand to over 50,000 Latinos living in the city of Detroit, inviting us to participate in the democratic process on the local level. That’s vital,” said Michael D. Gutierrez, EL CENTRAL’s Digital Content Manager, who translated each of the 40+ videos into Spanish. “Sheila Cockrel’s and CitizenDetroit’s commitment to the city’s non-English speaking communities not only increases voter turnout across the board, but it also helps us all make informed decisions in a period of history where misinformation is at its height.”
