Wayne State University’s College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts present Hilos de Identidad from Sept. 18 through Dec. 12, 2026, at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.
Rooted in the heartbeat of close-knit barrios, spaces shaped by tradition, family, memory, and mutual care, Latino artists connected to Detroit’s communities transform the uncertainties of everyday life into bold declarations of presence and pride. Hilos de Identidad honors the ways art becomes refuge and resonance: the vibrant colors of celebration, the weight of untold stories, all held within a city already defined by resilience.
This exhibition celebrates the impact of Latino artists, carrying their cultural inheritance and artistic legacy into a space where the city’s past and future intersect, contributing to the city’s ongoing transformation. At a time when identity and belonging are increasingly called into question, their work becomes a cultural footprint in motion.
The exhibition includes work by the following artists: Diana Alva, Peter Daniel Bernal, Elton Monroy Duran, Jacinto Herrera, Mary Laredo Herbeck, Alvaro Jurado, Kimberly LaVonne, Juan Martinez, Nora Chapa Mendoza, Ivan Montoya, Irene Perez, Dalia Reyes, Julianna Sanroman Rojas, Vito J. Valdez, and George Vargas.
Public programing including lectures, workshops, and tours will be hosted throughout the duration of the exhibition. Details regarding special events will be announced after the opening reception. Public programming is in collaboration with Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies.

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERIES
WSU Art Galleries stem to educate the next generation of visual artists, designers, and art historians, and housed under WSU’s College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. The college programs two galleries for the benefit of our university and surrounding communities. The Art Department Gallery (ADG) was established in 1956 and focuses on student, faculty, and alumni exhibitions, as well as the work of community artists. The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery (ELJG), 1997, presents exhibitions of national and international significance.
The ELJG and ADG are part of a visual arts network located in Detroit Cultural Center Area, along with the Detroit Institute of Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, College for Creative Studies, Detroit Artists Market, Scarab Club and N’namdi Gallery; the galleries significantly contribute to the vitality of Detroit as a destination for visual arts.

The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts is home to today’s aspiring artists, performers, technicians, scholars, dancers, debaters, entrepreneurs, and communication professionals who all represent the college’s legacy of excellence in our respective fields. The college serves students majoring in 17 undergraduate programs, 10 graduate programs and three graduate certificates through its departments: the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art, Art History, and Design, the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, and the departments of communication and music.

Enraizados en el latido del corazón de barrios unidos, espacios moldeados por tradición, familia, memoria, y cuidado mutuo, artistas latinos conectados a las comunidades de Detroit transforman las incertidumbres de la vida cotidiana en declaraciones audaces de presencia y orgullo. Hilos de Identidad honra las maneras en que el arte se convierte en refugio y resonancia: los colores vibrantes de celebración, el peso de historias no contadas, todo sostenido dentro de una ciudad ya definida por resiliencia.
Esta exhibición celebra el impacto de artistas latinos, llevando su herencia cultural y legado artístico a un espacio donde el pasado y futuro de la ciudad se intersectan, contribuyendo a la transformación continua de la ciudad. En un tiempo cuando identidad y pertenencia están siendo cada vez más cuestionadas, su trabajo se convierte en una huella cultural en movimiento.
