Congress of Communities (COC) is looking for youth to join its Latinx Youth Council (LYC), a two-year long journey of leadership development. Youth come together to learn about Latinx history. culture, social justice, educational justice, community organizing skills, and the power of their voice.
This year will focus on organizing youth to attend and use their voice on issues they want solutions for by being present and reporting on the school board meetings.
LYC has been empowering youth since 2012 and each cohort has incorporated outreach, education, and/or service to the larger community. LYC has gone to Washington DC to support and advocate through projects like Owning It, Our Education and the Dream Act. They also launched Nuestro Futuro mentorship programs to prepare southwest Detroit students for college and strengthen intergenerational alliances. LYC members attended advocacy days at the state capitol, spoke to city council members and school board members, and helped plan community events.
The program meets once a week after school from October to May, and youth receive stipends for attending meetings. The deadline to apply has been extended to September 22. The first of two parent orientations will be held on the same date so parents and youth can be introduced to CoC and LYC. Register at https://tinyurl.com/5bezf68t
