The Talentos Latinos Awards celebrated its eighth edition Friday,

Oct. 2, in Lincoln Park, during an evening that also marked the 10th anniversary of Latinos en Michigan TV and the unveiling of its new identity, Latinos en Michigan USA (Latinos en MI USA).

Held at Lincoln Manor, the ceremony brought together community leaders, entrepreneurs, artists and families, recognizing nine people selected through community voting and two additional leaders for their contributions to education and business development.

“When we started, we never imagined how far this project could grow. Reaching eight years of the awards while also celebrating 10 years of telling the stories of our community allows us to look back, but also to think about all the work that still lies ahead,” said Liliana Ospina, organizer of the Talentos Latinos Awards and president of the Minority Education Freedom Foundation (MEFF).

The evening combined the awards with celebrations of Latino culture through music, dance and art, with perfor- mances by singers Rosalina and Kenya Cruz, dance groups Joyas de México and Reflejos Latinos, salsa dancers Juancho Castañeda and Ana Maria Martinez, and the live pop-rock band Los Asintomáticos.

Andrea Puebla, who received the Latino Community Leader Award, reflected on the recog- nition and the experiences that have shaped her community work. “It was an honor to receive this recognition, and I am grateful for the opportuni- ties I have had throughout my life to represent and support our community,” Puebla said. “But none of those opportuni- ties would have been possible without my mom’s courageous decision to come to the United States to give my siblings and me a better future.”

Puebla was one of nine people honored in categories selected through community voting. The other recipients were Ana Deisy Gutiérrez,

Latino Legacy Award; Cecilia Jiménez of Dolce Bakery, Michigan Latino Entrepreneur; Gabriela Vázquez, Talento Musical Latino; Lermit Díaz, Latino Activist Artist; Vanessa Mendoza, Voluntario Latino; Stephanie Chang, Amigo de los Latinos Award; Laura Chávez, Altruismo Latino; and María Fernanda Gómez, Latino Realtor.

The ceremony also included two special recognitions. Dr. Jorge Chinea received the Latino Educational Leader Award for his academic career and contributions to educa- tion and Latino studies after stepping down this year from his leadership role at Wayne State University’s Center for

Latino/a and Latin American Studies. Guillermo Cisneros, president and CEO of the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, received the Latinos Business Ambassador recognition for his leadership and work supporting business development in West Michigan’s Hispanic community.

Eight years after its first edition, the Talentos Latinos Awards has grown from a community recognition initia- tive into an annual celebration bringing together different generations and sectors of Michigan’s Latino community as the awards head toward their ninth edition.
