Detroit PBS and Michigan Central invite the public to join them at Michigan Central to share their family’s migration story of how they came to Detroit.

For the next two weekends, Detroit PBS, in partnership with Michigan Central, will welcome community members across Metro Detroit to attend the second and third of three weekend-long events in February at The Station at Michigan Central.

Each weekend event includes screenings of “Great Migrations: A People on the Move,” by scholar, producer and host, Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; food from Black-owned businesses, performances by Detroit artists; and a new initiative by the Detroit PBS One Detroit team called Destination Detroit, which video records visitors relating their personal histories and how their families made a home for themselves in Metro Detroit.

The event’s first two days earned an overwhelmingly positive response. During the first weekend of the Destination Detroit initiative, the One Detroit team interviewed 24 individuals, capturing  family histories. The heartfelt recollections poignantly told how grandparents and parents arrived in Detroit from the Deep South, Somalia, Germany, Mexico, Laos, and other places around the globe.

People waited in line patiently for their opportunity to share their ancestral stories and said that they felt honored that their PBS station would take the time to record their family history with a professional producer and crew. Detroit PBS plans to make these recordings accessible to the public in a Destination Detroit Oral History Archive, as part of its America250 initiative to tell the rich and complex history of the community.

The Great Migration event at Michigan Central aligns with the broadcast of Prof. Gates’ new docuseries “Great Migrations: A People on the Move,” which is currently airing on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. The series opens at a time In the early 20th century when upwards of 300,000 Black Americans migrated to Detroit from the South escaping systemic oppression and seeking the promise of freedom and opportunity. The bustling halls of what was then Michigan Central Station were often their first glimpse of what the North might have to offer and for many, the first time they had experienced integrated public spaces.

It explores the initial wave of Black migration, driven by the search for better economic opportunities, as well as the “New Great Migration,” when African Americans moved back to the South following the Civil Rights Movement. The series also examines the “Next Great Migration,” which highlights the influx of Caribbean and African immigrants and their growing influence on American society.

The Michigan Central event is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on these dates:

  • Saturday, Feb. 15
  • Sunday, Feb. 16
  • Saturday, Feb. 22*
  • Sunday, Feb. 23

*On Feb. 22, the event runs until 3 p.m.

Because of the expected immense public interest in Michigan Central and this event, capacity is limited. Registration is required by visiting: michigancentral.com/events

Saturday, Feb. 22, will be a special day. Besides all the above activities, there will be a panel discussion, led by “American Black Journal” host Stephen Henderson and leading authorities and cultural figures, including Detroit’s official city historian, Jamon Jordan, and Neil Barclay, president and CEO of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
