St. Hedwig Catholic Church once again rang with music and dancing on Friday, May 21. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) performed a free 75-minute concert in the historic church that evening as part of their Detroit Neighborhood Initiative outreach to the community.

Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez, nationally known for his unique style of audience engagement, gave both English and Spanish commentary as he led the DSO in traditional, inventive and popular music. The featured pieces were written by composers from Brazil, Chili, Cuba, Venezuela and Mexico. Two dances performed during the concert by the Ballet Folkloric Moyocoyani Ezel in traditional colorful garb and dazzling smiles were a feast for the eyes and ears.

This was the third year that the DSO performed at St. Hedwig’s. The venue, with its marble columns and stained glass lent itself to the vibrant atmosphere. The concert ended with a lively rendition of Guantanamera that had guests swaying in rhythm. It was truly a delight for the ears, eyes and spirit!
