The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) continues to contribute to the growth and well-being of the City of Detroit with a musical experience event at St. Hedwig Catholic Church on May 24. Part of the DSO’s Detroit Neighborhood Initiative through the organization’s Detroit Strategy, the event was developed in collaboration with organizations and community members in Southwest Detroit and is free and open to the public.

Led by conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez, the concert will include Charles Gounod’s Hymn to Saint Cecilia (arr. Bela Keler), Gustav Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, Manuel Penella’s Pasodoble from El gato montés, Teòfilo Àlvarez’s Marinera Trujillana, Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion (arr. Robert Longfield), Andrés Soto Marín’s Heredia por Media Calle, José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango (arr. Manuel Enríquez), an arrangement of Vista Alegre by Lopez-Yañez, and performances by Ballet Folklorico Moyocoyani Izel.

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at St. Hedwig Catholic Church (3245 Junction Ave, Detroit, MI 48210). This family-friendly event is free and open to the public and no tickets are required.

The May 24 performance is generously sponsored by the General Motors Corporation, and is presented in partnership with the City of Detroit’s Office of Arts, Culture, and Entrepreneurship.

Enrico Lopez-Yañez will conduct family-friendly program featuring works by Latin American composers and performances by Ballet Folklorico Moyocoyani Izel

Enrico Lopez-Yañez is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Nashville Symphony where he leads the Symphony’s Pops Series and Family Series. Lopez-Yañez is quickly establishing himself as one of the Nation’s leading conductors of popular music and becoming known for his unique style of audience engagement.

This event follows the success of a previous DSO performance at St. Hedwig Catholic Church in February 2022, which was also conducted by Lopez-Yañez and featured a performance by Ballet Folklorico Moyocoyani Izel.

“We are thrilled to be in our third year of rich collaboration with organizations and residents in Southwest Detroit,” said Karisa Antonio, the DSO’s Director of Social Innovation. “Experiencing the DSO in the beautiful, historic setting of St. Hedwig Church is an incredibly moving experience. As one audience member said after last year’s performance ‘I felt like I was in the gates of heaven!’”

Throughout the summer, the DSO will also offer additional community programming at locations across Detroit. Events include Chandler Park Sounds of Summer on June 10, Black Panther in Concert on June 24, Clark Park Culture and Arts Festival on July 8, and Chandler Park Community Arts and Music Festival on July 15.

Additional DSO summer community events will be announced as they are confirmed. Visit dso.org/DNI for the latest list of programming.

2022-2023 SEASON DSO SAFETY POLICIES: The DSO no longer requires audiences to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend performances. Masks are optional although strongly recommended at DSO performances, particularly when Wayne County and surrounding communities are in the high or “red” category as defined by the CDC. The DSO asks audience members to do their part to create a safe environment for everyone and encourages those who are not feeling well to stay home.
