The annual conference of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) is an opportunity for publishers to catch up on the latest trends and innovations in the ever changing media industry, network with colleagues from around the country, and compete for cherished recognition in various publication award categories as judged by media experts and former winners.
This year’s conference was held on the Loyola campus near the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, IL from Oct 23-25. The agenda was packed with valuable workshops covering everything from integrated digital platforms, marketing innovations, and the latest fundraising strategies to ensure the sustainability of independent media.
Each year, the NAHP sponsors the Jose Marti Publishing Awards, which are one of the oldest and by far the largest Hispanic Media Awards in the USA. The Awards are names after Jose Julian Marti Perez (1853 – 1895). Marti was a Cuban poet, essayist, journalist, revolutionary philosopher, professor, translator, political theorist and publisher. A true renaissance man, Marti was a tireless advocate who saw the enormous power of print. The Awards in his name honor his memory and those in the industry who seek to impact and motivate readers across the USA and beyond through the highest levels of journalism and advocacy.
Attending her first NAHP conference, Publisher Garza Dewaelsche was impressed with the quality and breath of the topics covered. “This industry is having to adapt rapidly to the changing ways in which our readers and followers receive their news and information, she said. “It’s reassuring to see the industry sharing strategies that will sustain their operations and preserve our reputation as trusted sources of information.”
One last bit of business was the election of the board of directors for the coming term. EL CENTRAL Managing Editor Robert Dewaelsche was elected to serve as an alternate director for the NAHP’s Midwest Region 3.
On behalf of the journalists, photographers, graphic artists and editors of EL CENTRAL Hispanic News, Publisher and Owner Eva Garza Dewaelsche and Managing Editor Robert Dewaelsche accepted awards in the following categories:
