During the formal session of the Detroit City Council on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, City Councilmember Gabriela Santiago-Romero presented Elizabeth Valdez, known affectionately as Ms. Liz and Mama Liz, with a Spirit of Detroit Award. In her prepared remarks, the Councilmember said, “Ms. Liz is a vital member of the District 6 community, working constantly to better the lives of Detroiters in any and every way she can. Whether it’s distributing school supplies at Back To School events, rallying volunteers for Halloween Trunk or Treat, providing families with resources to celebrate the holidays, coordinating or hosting Easter Egg Hunts at the park they helped to clean up and reactivate, she is there at the helm, ensuring things get done.
“Through her organization Detroit Southwest Pride, Ms. Liz has also initiated Stop The Violence marches, civilian safety radio patrols, and acts as a sounding board for community needs, connecting neighbors and needful community members with resources at every turn.
“And to the next generation of community leaders, she has served as an exemplary role model, as someone who carries with them a strong spirit of compassion, kindness, and generosity for all, and especially those who most need it.”
In accepting the award, Ms. Valdez said, I’m thankful for being here today. I encourage everyone to get involved and set an example for our kids that are coming up. They need encouragement. They need to be shown compassion and love and giving without judgement.” She concluded her remarks by saying “I’m just happy to do what I do to help the community.”
