Southwest Detroit Nonprofits Search for New Homes

Ford Fund lease for the FREC ends at the Mexicantown Mercado

Over the last decade, Gleaners, a nonprofit food bank, has supported the Southwest Detroit community by providing supplemental food boxes and emergency food supplies. Their food pantries and mobile drive-up distributions have ensured that thousands of residents receive the necessary nourishment to sustain themselves and their families. As of this month, Gleaners, along with several other Southwest Detroit nonprofit organizations, received notice that they must relocate.

Gleaners operates in Southwest Detroit under the auspices of the Ford Resource and Engagement Center (FREC) located in the Mexicantown Mercado. For the past ten years, the Ford Fund has rented all of the retail space at the Mexicantown Mercado, allowing organizations like Gleaners, Accounting Aid Society, SER Metro-Detroit and LA SED to serve the community’s needs. The Ford Fund has been informed by the owners of the Mercado that it will not have the opportunity to renew its lease, forcing more than a dozen nonprofit organizations and programs to move.

According to a notice on the Ford Fund’s website, “As of March 15, 2024, FREC Southwest operations and services will no longer be offered at the Mexicantown Mercado located at 2826 Bagley St. Detroit, MI 48216. Services will transition to a new model with multiple in-person access points across Southwest.”

The Mercado is owned by the Mexicantown Community Development Corporation (MCDC). Future plans for the 12,900-square-foot space are still being worked out. How much space will be rented after the lease ends in March of this year is still unclear.

Raymond Lozano, Executive Director of the Mexicantown CDC, looks forward to continuing to be a staple resource hub for the Southwest Detroit community. “I’m not a part of the negotiations with Ford and Gleaners, but I know the resources will still be available to the community. The current tenants are moving to a new location, but the residents, the people in the community, will not be left behind.”

Judith McNeeley, Vice President of Community Engagement at Gleaners, wants Detroiters to know Gleaners may be moving, but they are committed and will continue to serve the community and provide access to food through a number of different avenues.

“We will continue with appointment-based food distribution; we’ll have the Fresh Market distribution, which happens once a week,” McNeeley says.

Hassan Hammoud, Senior Manager of the Ford Motor Company Fund, said, “We are here to support all the current nonprofits at the FREC through this transition and beyond. I have been tasked with finding a new location, which I’m still searching for, and one of the key features on top of the wish list is ensuring we don’t lose the community piece (at a new location) to continue community events and celebrations.”

Also having to move is the Accounting Aid Society. With the tax season underway, residents may be concerned about the transition affecting essential tax services. However, Priscilla Perkins, President and CEO of Accounting Aid Society, says change is inevitable, and their mission drives them to keep serving.

“The only thing you can count on is change. And what’s important is how we pull together to make this pivot. I don’t see this as a bad thing. This is an opportunity to serve the community still in Southwest Detroit because it relies on us. The location has changed, but the mission has not.”

I love the Mercado; I love the energy there. But decisions have been made that are out of our control. So what we have to do as servants of the people is figure out how we continue to meet their needs with the least disruption possible,” Perkins says.

For the past 10 years, FREC has also provided space for LA SED, offering services ranging from citizenship courses and Zumba to Southwest Detroit residents.  Mary Carmen Muñoz, Executive Director of LA SED, said her organization has been fortunate enough to associate with the Ford Fund.

“It has been a great partnership during that time. We have increased our programming without investing in a brick-and-mortar. We have been able to provide community navigation and translation assistance, and there were a lot of additional programs we were able to offer due to the FREC,” Muñoz said. “This was an excellent opportunity for us as a small nonprofit with limited funding. So, we are very saddened by the inability to work with the leaseholder.”

Nonprofits have relied on the Ford Resource Center (FREC) and Ford Fund for more than ten years, allowing local residents to access essential services and programs. The FREC has been a central hub that has brought together nonprofit partners, access to food resources, legal assistance, income tax preparation, education and job training and placement, cultural celebrations, and wellness activities all under one roof. Accounting Aid’s Perkins summed up the resolve of the nonprofits that have been part of the FREC at the Mercado going forward. “We’re going to find another convenient place where the wonderful, hardworking families that deserve our time and attention can find us. We’ve got communications ready in Spanish and English, but a decision has yet to be made (on a new location); we’re working on that. We hope to know by (mid-February), and we’re going to commit to communicating effectively to get that information out,” Perkins said.

El Mercado es propiedad de la Corporación de Desarrollo Comunitario de Mexicantown (MCDC). Aún se están elaborando los planes para el espacio de 12,900 pies cuadrados. Aún no está claro cuántas oficinas se alquilarán después de que finalice el contrato de arrendamiento en marzo de este año.

Raymond Lozano, director ejecutivo de Mexicantown CDC, espera seguir siendo un centro de recursos básicos para la comunidad del suroeste de Detroit. “No soy parte de las negociaciones con Ford y Gleaners, pero sé que los recursos seguirán estando disponibles para la comunidad. Organizaciones se están cambiando a otra ubicación, pero los residentes, la gente de la comunidad, no serán dejados atrás.”

Judith McNeeley, vicepresidenta de participación comunitaria de Gleaners, quiere que los habitantes de Detroit sepan que Gleaners va a reubicarse, pero que están comprometidos y continuarán sirviendo a la comunidad y brindando acceso a alimentos a través de diferentes vías.

“Continuaremos con la distribución de alimentos con cita previa; Tendremos la distribución Fresh Market, que se realiza una vez a la semana”, comentó McNeeley.

También se tendrá que reubicar la Accounting Aid Society,  con la temporada de impuestos en marcha, los residentes podrían estar preocupados por la transición que afecta los servicios tributarios. Sin embargo, Priscilla Perkins, presidenta y directora ejecutiva de Accounting Aid Society, afirmó que el cambio es inevitable y su misión los impulsa a seguir sirviendo.

“Lo único constante es el cambio. Y lo importante es cómo nos unimos para dar este giro. No veo esto como algo malo. Esta es una oportunidad para servir a la comunidad que se encuentra en el suroeste de Detroit porque “La ubicación ha cambiado, pero la misión no”.

Me encanta El Mercado; me encanta la energía que hay allí. Pero se han tomado decisiones que están fuera de nuestro control. Así que lo que tenemos que hacer como servidores del pueblo es descubrir cómo seguir satisfaciendo sus necesidades con la menor perturbación posible”, dice Perkins.

Durante los últimos 10 años, FREC también ha brindado espacio para LA SED, ofreciendo servicios que van desde cursos de ciudadanía hasta Zumba a los residentes del suroeste de Detroit. Mary Carmen Muñoz, directora ejecutiva de LA SED, comentó que su organización ha tenido la suerte de asociarse con el Ford Fund.

“Ha sido una gran asociación durante ese tiempo. Hemos aumentado nuestra programación sin invertir en un espacio físico. Hemos podido brindar asistencia de navegación y traducción a la comunidad, y programas adicionales gracias a FREC”, dijo Muñoz. “Esta fue una excelente oportunidad para nosotros como una pequeña organización sin fines de lucro con fondos limitados. Por eso, estamos muy tristes por la imposibilidad de seguir trabajando con ellos”.

Las organizaciones sin fines de lucro han dependido del Centro de Recursos Ford (FREC) y del Fondo Ford durante más de diez años, permitiéndoles a los residentes locales acceder a servicios y programas esenciales. FREC ha sido un centro que ha reunido a socios sin fines de lucro, acceso a recursos alimentarios, asistencia legal, preparación de impuestos sobre la renta, educación y capacitación y colocación laboral, celebraciones culturales y actividades de bienestar, todo bajo un mismo techo. Accounting Aid’s Perkins resumió la determinación de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro que han avanzado siendo parte de FREC en el Mercado. “Vamos a encontrar otro buen lugar donde puedan visitarnos las maravillosas y trabajadoras familias que merecen nuestro tiempo y atención. Hemos tenido conversaciones en español e inglés, pero aún no se ha tomado una decisión (sobre la nueva ubicación); estamos trabajando en eso. Esperamos saberlo para mediados de febrero, y nos comprometemos a comunicarnos de manera efectiva para difundir esa información”, dijo Perkins.
