Southwest Detroit has long been a point of entry for newcomers to our city, whether it was by boat (think early settlers), by train, bus or auto (think Great Migration North). Today, we can add to the list, “by air” (via Metro Airport). The City
of Detroit has unveiled its plans to erect a huge welcoming sign for visitors arriving to our fair city along the I-94 route from Metro Airport to downtown Detroit. And, where exactly will the sign be placed? Where else other than in Southwest Detroit on eastbound I-94 between Central Ave and Cecil Ave!
The 10′ tall letters spelling out “DETROIT” and a “Welcome to Detroit” sign are currently being fabricated by Fairmont Sign Company in Northeast Detroit.
The permanent illuminated Gateway signage will be installed in mid-March in time to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors to Detroit for the NFL Draft on April 25-27.
Thank you, NFL, for staging this “super” popular event in our city, and of course, we have to add, GO LIONS!
