MANA de Metro Detroit is the local chapter of MANA a National Latina Organization. Its mission is to empower Latinas and create a better quality of life for all Latinos through education, leadership development, and advocacy. MANA also emphasizes personal empowerment, professional development, networking and community service.
With this mission in mind, in 1996, MANA de Metro Detroit established its Scholarship Program. Since then, it has been providing scholarships to Latinas annually. As of 2022, MANA has awarded 138 scholarships to Latinas currently enrolled in high school or a higher education institution, vocational /career program or leadership training. The MANA Scholarship award can be used to augment a student’s educational budget to cover costs such as tuition, books, transportation needs, supplies, and other school related expenses.
MANA de Metro Detroit is pleased to announce that the 2023 scholarship application process is now open and Latina/Hispanic high school seniors, college and/or trade students can apply online at MANA’s website. In continuing MANA’s legacy of supporting Latinas, this year a new scholarship has been established for students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
For this 2023-2024 school year, MANA will award four different scholarships as well as renewal scholarships, to qualified high school seniors and Latinas attending college or trade schools. Each scholarship award is in the amount of two-thousand ($2,000) dollars. The scholarships are combined in one application that is posted on the MANA website. Applicants that meet the requirements may apply for one or more scholarships, however they will only be awarded one scholarship. The four scholarship categories are:
- The MANA de Metro Detroit – General Scholarship designed to assist students in any field of study;
- The Carmen Muñoz Entrepreneurship Scholarship to continue Carmen Muñoz’ legacy of entrepreneurism and community engagement;
- The Monica L. Martinez Leadership Scholarship to support students who want to follow Monica Martinez’ footsteps in the fields of leadership and community engagement; and
- The Ellen Ochoa STEM Scholarship in honor of Dr. Ochoa, the first Latina to go to space as a scientist and astronaut.
Who is eligible to apply for these scholarships?
