Wednesday February 21 Mario Grillo, son of the legendary bandleader and singer Frank “Machito” Grillo, enthralled the full house of well over 100 people at Wayne State University throughout his hour plus presentation. The lecture presented in a “question and answer format” was entitled “Machito and Afro-Latino Jazz and Dance Music” as part of the university’s Black History Month celebrations. A master storyteller, Mario spoke vividly about the various personalities surrounding his father’s and his own careers. Machito and his uncle Mario Bauza formed the Afro Cubans in 1940 which lead to ground breaking and continued innovations in the music we now call Latin Jazz and Salsa.

It was amazing how Mario intertwined the stories of people he, his uncle and father knew, most of whom they worked with over the years, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Chico O’ Ferrell, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, and Chick Webb among others. People we consider the giants in Jazz and Latin music. For the past forty-five years, Mario Grillo has directed the Machito Big Band and in his own right has influenced Latin Jazz and Salsa.

This year marks the 85th year anniversary of Machito and the Afro Cubans, Mario proudly exclaimed a couple times during his presentation. He hopes, and yes expects, his 8-year and 10 year-old grandsons to lead the orchestra to its 100th anniversary! He proudly talked about the fact they are studying music and already show signs of artistic promise.

For those of you who may not be aware of the historical importance of Machito and the Afro Cubans, here goes. A well-known singer since the 1920’s, he moved to New York City in 1937 where he joined Mario Bauzá, who had gained recognition for his work as the musical director of a number of African-American jazz big bands. Those bands included historic figures like Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, and Chick Webb. Bauza went on to introduce jazz trumpeter extraordinaire Dizzy Gillespie and vocalist Sarah Vaughan to the world of jazz. Bauza’s jazz pedigree was well established by the time the Machito y Sus AfroCubanos was formed. The music played by the band would go on to inspire many jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, George Shearing and Stan Kenton among others.

When they formed the Afro Cubans they consciously blended Cuban and Puerto Rican sounds with big band Afro-American Jazz to develop a New York Latin approach and tradition that would go on to become the world rage namely Latin Jazz and mambo, the latter what we now call Salsa. A number of musical greats were incubated in this groundbreaking band like Tito Puente, who began playing with them at the age of 16. Later on, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez and Machito’s Afro Cubanos would usher in the golden age of Mambo during their tenure at the Palladium in New York City from the late 40’s through the early 60’s. Latin music would never be the same!

In addition to leading the Machito Big Band, Mario Grillo holds high his father’s legacy through the work of the Big Three Palladium Band which he co-leads with Tito Rodriguez Jr., the son of another legendary mambo king, Tito Rodriguez Senior. In fact, both bands have performed in Detroit over the years starting in 1988 with the nation’s first and historic memorial concert in honor of Machito at Orchestra Hall. Musicians were brought in from New York and Puerto Rico to join Detroit jazz icons including drummer J.C. Heard and trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, among others. Cultural activists from Southwest Detroit and its Latino community were the primary organizers of the event putting our community in the national spotlight!

As the program ended and the crowd was left wanting more the announcement was made that we won’t have to wait much longer to see Mario again. He will be co-leading the Big Three Palladium Big Band at this year’s Concert of Colors Saturday, July 20th! I know I will not miss it because I am bringing my dancing shoes!!!
