Southwest Solutions, in partnership with Family Alliance for Change, Youth United and the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network, is using the month of July to gather backpacks and school supplies for Detroit schoolchildren as it hosts its annual Backpacks for Dreams backpack drive. The Detroit-based nonprofit has a goal of collecting 1,300 sets of supplies to support students during the 2023-2024 school year, which includes a premium backpack and a primary, elementary or middle/high school set of school supplies.
“Each year, over 15 million kids around the country go to school without the supplies needed to actively learn and participate in class,” said Sean De Four, president and CEO of Southwest Solutions.
“Backpacks for Dreams aims to support the schoolchildren of Detroit so that they can focus less on worrying about where they will get their school supplies from and more on achieving their dreams.”
To reach its goal, the nonprofit urges coworkers, friends or families to compete against each other in teams to see how many backpacks they can acquire together. Donations will be accepted through July 24. Backpacks and supplies can be donated using the following link: https://www.roonga.com/btsb
The school supplies will be distributed to families during the annual Back to School Bash celebration on August 18. A location will be announced later in the summer.
