Thanksgiving and Fall-Winter Festivals

Thanksgiving Day is an American celebration full of light and dark and contrasts. The story begins when in 1621 the Wampanoag nation of Plymouth,

Massachusetts invited European settlers to share the feast of gratitude for the autumn harvests. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday. However, it was not until 1941 with the government of Franklin D. Roosevelt that it was officially established through Congress as the last Thursday of November of each year.

And it is during this November season that families and friends gather to have dinner and give thanks for everything they have had in the year. It may seem irrelevant, but, unlike Christmas and the New Year’s party, on this day we give thanks for the love, freedom and prosperity we had. We take advantage of it to give to others not in the form of gifts, but in gratitude, to share what we have. Although Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Latin American countries, in the homes of those who have already settled in the United States, the date is used to socialize and share traditional foods from their countries. They undoubtedly accompany or replace turkey with tamales, pozole, pupusas, rice with beans, roast pork or loin, tostones, mondongo, among other delicacies.

It is important to take into account that for the cultures of different countries, the celebrations that unite the seasons of autumn and winter abound, some are associated with the harvest, the migration of birds, butterflies, or, as a prelude to Christmas, a cultural encounter. A visit to the state of Michoacán during the month of November is a destination not to be missed, between the Day of the Dead festivities at the beginning of November, along with the spectacular landscapes of Lake Camécuaro, followed by a visit to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary during its migration and closing with a visit to the spectacular Glass Ball Fair in the Magical Town of Tlapujahua, with Christmas balls that go beyond traditional designs by exploring designs with monarch butterflies and floral motifs from the region.

Then, to close the month, there is the city of Guadalajara, where the International Book Fair begins on the last weekend of November, the most important in Latin America and which is surrounded by a series of cultural activities that complement the book presentations by great writers, editors and scientists at the International Book Fair, as well as visual arts exhibitions, plays, cinema, concerts and, of course, a gastronomic tour that should not be missed.
