This past Saturday, November 30th, the Guadalajara International Book Fair, by its acronym in Spanish, FIL, was inaugurated. This Fair is the most important in the Spanish language and the second most important in the world. It is an event that receives about ten thousand people daily, including children, adolescents, editors, writers, professionals from the world of reading and writing who walk one by one through the halls.

The International Book Fair is a cultural immersion in the city of Guadalajara, with concerts, arts exhibitions in museums, movie theaters presenting films by filmmakers from the guest country or region of honor, which in this case was Spain, some restaurants modify their menu to offer a visit to the gastronomy of the region guest, without leaving aside the abundant visit of authors.

On this occasion, during the opening ceremony, the FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages was awarded to Mia Couto, a writer of Mozambican origin, who despite belonging to the African continent shares the identity of the peoples colonized by the Iberian Peninsula.

Mia Couto took us to the nostalgia of his life with his father, his father who, looking at the savannah, asks Mia Couto if he likes what he sees. Mia, just a child, is reflecting on being just a small drop of being in that immense universe.

In this 2024, the International Book Fair welcomed the 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature Abdulrazak Gurnah, who gave a keynote lecture in which he addressed the issues of migration, refugees and exiles, mainly.

Abdulrazak mentioned the importance of being aware of the importance of approaching these issues from a position of “sympathy, kindness, humanity and justice”, since, sometimes, some people forget to understand that the human migratory movement responds to the need to either survive or find a place to do what we are passionate about.

In his book: By the sea, his main character, while being detained by the custom officer to enter England, thinks: “Edelman… was it a German surname? Or Jewish? […] in any case, it was the surname of the master of Europe, who knew the values of the continent and had sacrificed for them over several generations. But the whole world had sacrificed for European values, most of the time without being able to enjoy them.” Says, Abdulrazak in his book.

Thus, all those who go from Latin America to the United States in search of a new life and who are sometimes reproached: “go back to your country.” Isn’t this everyone’s wish? Being able to stay in comfort in our homeland where the music and the taste of the food satisfy the palate.

We see then that at this International Book Fair, it is possible to bring great writers closer to the general public, offering them conferences that expand the vision of the world.

After these stellar presentations, lesser-known authors, but with a great career, such as Óscar Fernández, publish his novel Yo, matadora, in which he addresses the search of a woman, Maripaz, to enter the world of bullfighting, questioning the social stigmas not only with respect to animal rights, but also gender roles.
