The Latino community wasted no time putting together a reception for Eminent Artist Nora Chapa Mendoza. On Saturday, March 16th, a gathering was held at the Latino Cultural Center, hosted by director Ray Lozano and assisted by community volunteers. A brief question and answer session was held with Nora, who inspired young artists with her direct answers to their questions. At age 92, Nora has had decades of experiences as an artist and cultural activist, Sun Dancer and respected elder. Some of her former students came and shared their experiences from their own youth, learning art and life lessons from Nora.
Friends and admirers came from near and far to give honor to our beloved Eminent Artist, the first Latin@ to receive the Kresge Award, and also only the second Latin@ to sign the rafter at the Scarab Club – next to Diego Rivera’s signature. Only 100 short years later, we witness the second Mexican to sign the rafter!
We are filled with pride and joy to be able to celebrate Nora and come together in fellowship. We are grateful for the recognition Nora has received. Not a moment too soon.
