Two leading community organizations serving Southwest Detroit, Urban Neighborhood Initiatives (UNI) and the Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Center, Inc., are launching a communications campaign to stress the importance of making COVID-19 vaccines part of everyone’s regular healthcare.

With the theme of “Building a Healthy Future” in mind and production support from Detroit Public Television, the organizations have created PSA-style video and radio messages, in both Spanish and English, by trusted local leaders to educate the community about the value of making the COVID-19 vaccination part of routine immunizations and other preventive health care.

The initiative also includes a delightful locally produced coloring book that parents can share with their children to bring home the Healthy Future message.

These resources will be offered on the digital platforms of UNI and CHASS. They also will be made available to community partners, local restaurants, and faith-based organizations in an ongoing effort to instill healthy habits. A QR code and links are included in all materials, directing the public to readily accessible vaccination sites.

“We believe that by working together, we can dispel myths and provide factual information in various ways that meet the needs of our community,” said Felix M. Valbuena, Jr., MD, CEO of CHASS Center. “We know that our residents have felt more comfortable going to vaccine sites in their neighborhood because the organizations have staff and volunteers that can communicate in their native language. By going to where people are with information and vaccines, we believe we can better reach our most vulnerable populations.”

The coloring book was created by Alexa Arriaga, a young artist who has been part of UNI’s Southwest Urban Arts Mural Project and who will enter the College for Creative Studies this fall. Reflecting the diversity of the community, the coloring book reinforces the “Building a Healthy Future” message that seeks to reinforce healthy habits, dispel vaccine hesitancy, and normalize COVID-19 vaccines as part of routine care.

UNI’s Executive Director, Christine Bell, said, “UNI understands the importance of partnering with community-based health and food organizations to ensure our residents are well physically and mentally. We have collaborated once again with CHASS as well as others, to ensure there is access in our neighborhood to all vaccines including the COVID-19 vaccine as well as food and mental health resources. With our partners we will continue to strive to make resources more accessible to families and build a healthy future together!”

The digital coloring book will be available for free download at https://chasscenter.org/ap/Healthy_Future_Community_Resources. A limited number of hard copies will be available upon request to community organizations. The coloring book request form can be accessed online via the same webpage.

Both CHASS and UNI offer COVID-19 vaccinations at no cost for persons 6 months of age and older. CHASS Center also provides free COVID-19 testing for all ages.

Additionally, the organizations have compiled a list of COVID-19 vaccination sites including community health centers, city and state resources: https://chasscenter.org/ap/COVID-19-VACCINE-COMMUNITY-RESOURCES

This campaign was supported by a grant from the Michigan Primary Care Association; funding partnerships between community-based organizations and health centers to increase access to the COVID-19 vaccine for vulnerable populations.
