Eva Garza Dewaelsche, President and CEO of SER Metro-Detroit and Publisher and Owner of EL CENTRAL, and Belda Garza, former state representative and president of MANA de Metro Detroit, accepted invitations extended by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at the White House on Monday, May 6. More than 100 invitees from around the nation attended the special event in the Rose Garden honoring the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla. Guests were entertained by an all-female Mariachi Band from Los Angeles and treated to a strolling buffet on the South Lawn.
President Biden addressed the guests and spoke about the importance of recognizing the Latino community and the many contributions that they have and continue to make to ensure our country is strong. He spoke about the need to address the issues that are important to Latino voters and how critical it is for us to be involved in this year’s election. The president highlighted the youth of our community and what an impact they will have on this year’s election. He noted the significant progress we have made in education and in the workforce and in increasing our household income and home ownership. Biden spoke about immigration and how we need immigrants to keep our country strong. He concluded his remarks by highlighting many of his administration’s accomplishments during his first term and the hard work ahead.
